About Me

stephaniesid played 2 packed sets at Bonnaroo!
Grus americanus is AVAILABLE for purchase from this site!
("Grus" is also available on iTunes, Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and at your favorite independent record stores).
"The second artist to quote Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" couldn't have been any different than Faulkner's solo escapades, and the brief tease of that 30-year-old classic came by way of a rather transcendent set by indie pop maven act, stephaniesid. The band was different, melodic, quirky, and just plain good when one thinks of how many bands were trashing guitars throughout the tents at this point of the evening. A sleeper act which hit the mark with an almost Bjork-like panache. Ahh.... Iceland, again." --The Bonnaroo Beacon ( official Bonnaroo photos here )
"A very mesmerizing mix of songs that can be hushed and calm one moment, and then suddenly dark and explosive the next." - Robin Hilton, NPR All Songs Considered (listen here)
"Fierce, siren-like intensity...voracious appetite for rhythm... a band that isn't afraid to risk being innovative to put out something truly personal." --Harp Magazine ( now Blurt )
"Dig It: A Scandinavian Pop princess gets lost in the American South and is rescued by a Jazz quartet."--CityBeat, Cincinnati
"...With an undeniable penchant for melody and the ability to deliver inspired vocals with soulful, jazz-inflected phrasing, Morgan is a pop princess on par with Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis and Feist.... Over the course of a handful of releases, regional touring and nods from national media outlets, Stephaniesid has created a serious buzz."--David Brewer, High Country Press
"...with the bustling metropolis of Asheville listed on their drivers' licenses, one would guess stephaniesid, despite its collegiate moniker, is likely some sort of country or folk act. Not bloody likely.... If you're into the Gothic chamber rock of Rasputina or the eclectic electronic pop of Bjork, stephanies--d will fit right into your collection."--The Other Paper, Columbus, OH
"Childlike and grown-up sounds mixing with poetry and pop. Angst and sorrow swirling around with dramatic hop and joyfulness." --Jack Rubin, The Big Takeover Magazine
"...soaring vocals and catchy hooks, odd and thoughtful lyrics, and clever gymnastics."--Berkeley Place, Brooklyn
About stephaniesid
"Although generally referred to as an indie-pop band, their sound is actually far more complex and compelling than that genre label implies. Starting off as a darkly bittersweet piano-bar duo (with Chuck Lichtenberger ..s and Stephanie Morgan singing), the group has since expanded to a full band and become one of the most interesting, experimental and creatively edgy acts in town. And they’ve been successful to boot, ...touring nationally and supporting the local scene through efforts like the POPAsheville music festival (formerly known as IdFest)....may be one of the defining Asheville-based music acts of this era."--Steve Shanafelt, Mountain Xpress
stephaniesid is indie pop revelry! We always play with heart and lust and gusto, because there's no point in doing anything else. We care about things in the world. We often brood about them. But not for terribly long or for too many songs, as there is no long-term gain in taking the human condition too seriously. The music, like life itself, is striving, searching, inconclusive, and (hopefully) beautiful.
We have chosen to live in the best city... Asheville, NC, in the mountains. And they've voted us "best indie band" here, 2 years in a row! People who live elsewhere and read about us are apt to think we've got banjos on our knees. Though Steph wishes she knew how to play a banjo, we are happy that people are slowly beginning to look around obvious identifiers.
We used to have a lot of other stuff about the history of the band up here on this page. But it's boring to read. Suffice to say we've been around for about 5 years, we like to tour, and people in increasing numbers are coming to hear us play.
We have 3 CD's out. We'd love it if you bought all of them, and our T-shirts and buttons and whatnot. Best to get them at live shows (because c'mon, it's best...our shows are awesome), but you can buy our albums or iTunes by clicking the links at left. We also take donations, unashamedly. Despite appearances, bands don't make a lot of money. You can contact us at [email protected] about that.
Thanks for listening :)
