Songs for Brave Girls and Lost Boys

About Me

What would've happened if Peter Pan's Wendy abandoned the Lost Boys to become the Pirate Queen of Neverland? What sort of tango would you dance with an alligator in your house? What befalls those brave enough to follow Inanna into the underground? S. J. TUCKER addresses these questions and more as she treads the lines of stories both ancient and modern, fiercely following where her music leads. Named Queen of the Bards by colleagues and recognized as the musical avatar of the lyrical and literary Mythpunk genre, S. J. is based in Memphis, TN, and tours the USA solo and as leader of two bands, Skinny White Chick and Tricky Pixie. Since she began her journey as a full-time performer in 2004, S. J. has released six full-length albums containing all-original material, as well as two live discs, on nothing but her own steam, and has run rings around her own US touring circuit. Her sound stretches from comedy to lullabyes to full-on punk, even including electronica from time to time, and she shows no signs of slowing down! S. J.'s latest release is Solace & Sorrow - songs and readings in celebration of The Orphan's Tales: In the Cities of Coin and Spice, by Catherynne M. Valente--the book and the album hit the streets together on October 30th 2007, followed by an east-coast multimedia tour that included live music, readings, dance performances, and an art show and auction which benefited the Interstitial Arts Foundation. S. J. is currently sailing through 2008 on the road with a glad heart and a wild gypsy grin!

With her own combination of deft guitar work, stunning original composition, and crystal-clear vocals, this Skinny White Chick garners frequent comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Ani Difranco, Tori Amos, and Jeff Buckley. Reviewers describe S. J.’s sound as “Celtic Blues, folk rock full of fire” (Green Man Review) and state that she delivers “a surprisingly energetic set” (Playback St. Louis). In a fine bit of press, smother.net said of her second album, Tangles, Singer/songwriters, take note--this is what you should be doing and how you should sound.

This year, amidst the whirlwind of her travels, S. J. hopes to get lots of work done for a long list of musical projects, including an album specifically for Pirate Girls, an album of electronic music, and an album filled with songs of wild beasts and spirits of Mischief. Stay tuned to her blog here on Myspace for updates and news!

S. J. often combines Skinny White Chick performances with a similarly enchanting endeavor known as Fire & Strings, a collaborative project between Tucker and fire artist/acrobat Kevin K Wiley. Fire & Strings tours alongside Skinny White Chick quite often, dazzling audiences through a fusing of fire play and improvisational music. Tucker accompanies Wiley’s fire play on a myriad of instruments or spins fire poi and staff along with Wiley, serving up exciting dance music of her own to accompany and inspire them both. Fire & Strings has performed to delighted crowds since its ignition, undertaking shows nationwide, and is fondly called cutting-edge by colleagues and friends in the firespinning community. Fully-insured, sensible and safe pyrophiliacs, Fire & Strings serve the muses and honor with their talents the truest passions in the known universe: song and flame. For a taste of this fire and passion, and an earful of some of S. J.'s newest electronic mixes, visit Fire & Strings here on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/firestrings

Sunday morning barefoot boogie. Dozens of dancers gyrate to a song they’ve never heard before. Grabbing the chorus, they sing: The circle is here/ It lives in each of us/ In perfect love/ And perfect trust. This is the magic of S.J. Tucker. And if you haven’t heard of her yet, you will.
