Sounds Like: One day a very classy gentleman strolled up to the foot of the stage and asked us “How do you define your band?†HOW DO WE DEFINE OUR BAND?? Let’s see, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a band could be something that confines or constricts while allowing a degree of movement. Our band certainly constricts constant attempts at definition- while you crave to unleash such ideal fodder upon our mental brow, our music keeps it all tightly sealed in your mind. Feel free, however, to move to the intoxication that is our sound. How about this one? “a group of persons, animals, or things; especially : a group of musicians organized for ensemble playing and using chiefly woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments.†We certainly are getting closer- but we have no woodwinds or brass. Musical animals can be our title, but it doesn’t give a clear notion of what we do. Strike two. Definition three- “a more or less well-defined range of wavelengths, frequencies, or energies.†Closer yet, but it just doesn’t speak to the personality, the verve, the fervor, the zest, the zeal, the fire, the emotion, and the insanity that falls within our “more or less well-defined rangeâ€. This definition is simply too bland to completely apply. Our band is the type of grounded celestial being that gives our musical etchings such accessibility and variety, that even we can’t name it. So, what did I tell that well-dressed man? I said “our band is like Mmmmph!†Don’t try to classify it. After all, did not knowing how many licks it takes to get to the center ever stop anyone from buying a Tootsie Pop? Just like that familiar confection, when it comes to where we lie within the musical stratosphere, “the world may never know.â€
