THE ARTIST
Steven Two Hawk (Northern-Siksika/French Canadian) is an 18 year old self-taught Native American Flutist, self taught Guitarist, and self-taught Traditional-media Artist. Music first became influential to him when he picked up his first guitar back in 1999, and since has self-taught himself how to play, with some help on the side by listening to artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Jimmy Page. Since recieving his first electric guitar, Two Hawk has been writing his own songs in the acoustical style inspired by Nature CD's such as Mountain Memories, where he taught himself and personally adopted the style of calm, high-noted, soft songs, such as the ones he created like Song of the Night Wolf, The Birth of Wanbli, and When the Spirit Within is Wolf.
The Native American Flute was first heard by Two Hawk when he recieved a CD called World Flutes, which on it ranged from Native American, Irish, Indian, African, South American, and Chinese flutes. The artist of the Native flute songs on this CD (Bryan Akipa) truly gave Two Hawk the essence of the instrument. Its aura when it was played brought his already love for his Native American heritage to a whole new soaring height. He bought his first Native Flute from the makers of Stellar Flutes in 2005, the low D# being his choice of key from hearing Eagle Dreams by Bryan Akipa. Since Two Hawk has listened to other artists to study different styles and has learned new ways of tremelos and vibratos.
OTHER TALENTS
Behind the music, as well as the inspiration for creating such music from the heart, Steven Two Hawk has an extreme devotion and passion for his Native American heritage. Being from the Northern-Siksika (Blackfoot) Confederacy has pointed him to have a very high interest in the Plains cultures of the mid-west, the Lakota-Sioux (soon-to-be adopted) highly sparking his interest in both their culture, ways of horsemanship, and language.
Along with using the flute and guitar to express his passions, Two Hawk also is a very talented Traditional Media Artist, being skilled in the areas of pencil, pen, and pen & ink. He is currently enrolled in the National Art Honors Society (NAHS) and has been given many artistic oppurtunities such as being nominated for the Art Allstates (Massachusetts Chapter) Art Competition, as well as being inducted into the many school Art Shows.
GOALS
Steven Two Hawk is currently applying to be a new student to the University of South Dakota (Vermillion, SD) and aims to major and someday get his Master's degree in American Indian Studies. Unsure of what he aims to do with this degree, he knows its the only thing he wishes to take serious in educational studies. Other schools he is applying to for back-ups are Northland College (Ashland, WI).
HOBBIES
Becides the mentioned, Two Hawk loves to be around, work, and ride Horses and practice Native Horsemanship by being a skilled bareback rider. Other things he takes an interest in are Traditional Art, Hip Hop, the new Indigenous Hip Hop Movement, Boxing, Photography, the American Indian Movement (AIM) and Native American Activism, Colonial American History, Wolves, Birds and Birds of Prey, Rock Music, and Enviornmental
Studies, and anything such as Native hip hop and AIM that propell his people foreward, by helping the people survive, encouraging the youth to recognize their heritage, and preserving traditions/ceremonies/sacred sites of tribal nations
