Something to sing about...

About Me

Positive waves of energy displayed through eclectic, melodic, poetic delivery. She defines the ebb and flow of femininity against the changing waves of time. With a unique blend of eclectic soul filled messages of love and life and haunting rhythmic pulses, she speaks in the familiar tongues of her ancestors and pulls strength from the heavens that house the stars of Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and Donny Hathaway. Her voice sings of the human situation with a sometimes light, sometimes dark but always kindred sense of urgency. She found a love for singing in church at the early age of five and began her vocal training at the age of seven. At fifteen she decided that it was time to place her thoughts on paper and began writing poetry. She later decided that her words would best be framed in melody. She formed and performed with several groups during her high school years, displaying her classical training and technique. During this time her talent was also showcased through performances with a Chicago based Gospel Choir. She continued her education carrying her love for music while honing her craft through out her college years. She has performed on several stages throughout the Chicago land area with her backing band Konstant Groove including the WGN Morning Show and the main stage of Taste of Chicago 2005. They have been considered a wonderful ambiance for dinner guests and a great motivation for dance crowds at the Negro League Café, Blu 47, and Sheraton Hotel in Chicago, Crystal Lakes Porters Oyster Bar and Nicks Fish Market of Rosemont, Illinois. When they are together, it is plain to see that they are family.Swaylo has had the opportunity to write for and work with a variety of other phenomenal bands and artist that in her own words have inspired her tremendously. Her current dance singles Shame ( Blackstone Recordings ), Slowly (Kenlou Records) and Follow Me (Shelter Records) can be found coating the walls of dance clubs on the home front as well as over seas. She also has music placed with the New York based label Phuture Sole records. Her writing and vocal style has been notably described as UNIVERSOULY AFRO LA- CENTRIC. Her voice has been compared to a wide range of artist stemming from Minnie Ripperton to Cassandra Wilson. She has also been known to visit the vocal style of Phillip Bailey during her live performances with an effortless sincerity that displays every ounce of passion that she holds for the sound of music. She is a singing, song-writing poet that invites you into her world and wraps you in the fine linen of home woven understanding. Her lyrics compel you to examine and accept who you are and the infinite possibilities that lie within. She finds comfort and creates when ever and where ever she can. Whether it be within the small confines of recording studios or bare foot on the stages of such venues as The Green Dolphin Street or the House of Blues, she will always make herself at home enough to share with those that are gifted with an ear that will allow their minds to see through sound. Influences: Influences? Well let's see. The in's and out's up's and down's of life. The strengths the insecurities that somehow seem to find me anyway... My reasons for breathing mother, my father, my husband (Kirk), my children, Sprite the Razor (mini me)...something about his eyes, Jada Mae (future stylist), Gank Star (Kirk dub) and The whole IVY CLICK but most of all, The Great IAM, HE who loves me more than I could ever dream to imagine...My GOD. And then there is the music. Stevie Wonder, Prince, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Chaka Kahn, EWF, Nina Simone, Bobby Caldwell, Bobby Mcferrin, Vinx, Diana Ross, Nat King Cole ( oh, how he could phrase a line...) George Benson, and Peven Everett. I've had the pleasure of working with and have been deeply influenced and inspired by my brothers, John Redmond (I miss you... still), Rocky(Marcus Ford), Shawn Wallace, Lidell Townsell, Glen Underground, Boo Williams, Gene Hunt, Trey Carruthers, and Dj Pap, My Vocal Coaches Linda Morgan and Mr. Malone, and alas' that guy that used to allow me to sing along with him and his guitar in the Subway on Jackson street when I didn't feel like going to school. It was very nice of him to allow me to use his living room as my first venue. My first stage was his own personal House of Blues. He listened to my voice and smiled for me. Through him I learned to keep my cool, stand alone but still be heard while life's train seemed to pass me by. He promised me that one day the people would listen. He understood my need to sometimes cry through a song. He taught me to silently scream above the anger and noise. He was very kind. I never got his name, but I witnessed his passion...His dedication haunts me still...
