About Me
.."You will be here."I am a Christian and member of The Catholic Church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. These Churches represent the Alpha and the Omega in my Christian walk. Here is a synopsis of the past 58 years via my first Toastmaster's International speech:I would like to open with a favorite quote from the poet Robert Browning which inspired me to join Toastmasters. He wrote, A man's reach should exceed his grasp or what's a heaven for?
Here is my reach tonight:
My earthly life began in New Orleans, Louisiana where my family lived in the Vieux Carre section of the French Quarter. It was all very picturesque, but I only have this on hearsay as we moved to Mobile, Alabama when I was 3 years old. Growing up in the South was a genteel experience, with life moving at a slow pace. Many times I remember sitting on the front porch in the cool of a summer evening having neighborhood conversations and watching fireflies - only we called them lightnin' bugs! I enjoyed my school years, did very well, and for that I am grateful to many excellent teachers. I went to parochial schools and was taught by the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of Loretto. Upon graduation, I came to Texas to attend the University of Houston, where I majored in English with a minor in Journalism. My dream was to become a real-life Brenda Starr, the heroine of a Sunday paper cartoon. She was portrayed as a dynamic, ace newspaper reporter whose life was filled with adventure. This was quite a contrast to my more introverted personality, yet it was a life attitude I had always wanted to emulate. However, I never completed my degree because I fell in love with a native Texan and was married in 1968. We were blessed with two daughters who were both born in the month of March, yet 10 years apart. Cindy was born in 1970 and Michele in 1980. Almost 10 years after that (in 1989) we had our grandson, Dylan. I often joked that every 10 years there was a baby in my life! My husband and I were divorced after 17 1/2 years of marriage, neither of us ever remarried and he passed away in 2000. I moved to Austin, Texas and work for the State of Texas. I enjoy my job, but enjoy even more the fact that I will be retiring in 2 years. Then, I plan to move back to Louisiana (this time to Lafayette where my eldest daughter lives). I will have come full circle.
My interests include studying Scriptures, a ministry to feed the homeless that I did in conjunction with a neighborhood Methodist Church, the internet, genealogy, attending LDS single adult socials, reviewing for "Texas Talking Books", Austin's live music venues, Kairos Prison Ministry, Jubilee's Food Pantry, family antiques, a dollhouse, churches, temples, and nun, bride, Tinkerbell, "winged things" dolls and figurines. I also enjoy pets: Perkins, a medium dachshund, and 3 cats: Buddy, a gray tabby, Lyle, a yellow tabby and Squeekers, a yellow Maine Coon. I will close with Amelia Earhart: Courage is the price that Life exacts for granting peace.Beautiful Mama:CELESTIAL ROOM - SAN ANTONIO, TEXASThose who inherit the celestial kingdom will live on this earth in the presence of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ "forever and ever; because, for this intent was it made and created". Like the first temple built by King Solomon they were both
built out of white limestone, which is a fossil rich rock. The first temple in Jerusalem was built by King Solomon, son of King David. Before his death David had "with all his might" provided materials in great abundance for the building of the temple on the summit of Mount Moriah (1Chr. 22:14; 1Chr. 29:4; 2Chr. 3:1), on the east of the city, on the spot where Abraham had offered up Isaac (Gen. 22:1-14).The first temple was burned, pillaged and destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon (2Kings 24:13; 2Chr. 36:7), who carried all the temple's treasures with him to Babylon. What is known as the second temple was built in the same location as the first temple. The foundations of the second temple were laid about 535 B.C. by Jewish exiles returning from captivity in Babylon. When Herod the Great became king of Judea the second temple had stood for about five hundred years. The building had suffered considerably from natural decay over the years as well as from the assaults of hostile armies, and Herod, desirous of gaining the favor of the Jews, proposed to rebuild it. This offer was accepted, and the work was begun (18 B.C.), and carried out at great labor and expense, and on a scale of unsurpassing splendor. The main part of the building was completed in ten years, but the erection of the outer courts and the embellishment of the whole were carried on during the entire period of our Lord's life on earth (John 2:16, John 2:19-21), and the temple was completed only A.D. 65.The temple, however, was not long permitted to exist. The Roman legions took the city of Jerusalem by storm, and notwithstanding the strenuous efforts Titus made to preserve the temple, his soldiers set fire to it in several places and it was utterly destroyed in 70 A.D.
