About Me

Grampas Grass is a sweet blend of southern rock, folk, blues, funk, Latin, and pure rock. This rootsy mix of sounds has led many to describe the music as classic rock with a fresh modern face. However you describe it, the songwriting and musical skill of vocalist Lisa Blue, lead guitarist Brett Davis, bassist Tim Kerrigan and guitarist/vocalist John Malsberger speaks for itself. Their debut album "These Are The Days" features the varied sounds that jambase.com writer Matt Layton describes, "It’s an album that keeps growing and growing on me. At first I had my favorite songs, but now I can’t decide what songs I like best. I like them all!" Based out of Costa Mesa, CA, the Grass is fast becoming one of southern California’s most popular bands. "This will be the album that puts us on the map." Says John Malsberger, the principle songwriter for the band. The studio album was produced by Jai Vatuk and Grampas Grass at the Haus of Love in Laguna Niguel, CA. It features the drumming talents of Dean Butterworth (Ben Harper, Morrisey), Wally Ingram (Sheryl Crow, David Lindley) and Phil Jones (Tom Petty). Released by LazyDog Records the album has been a labor of love for the band. "It’s our first album, of course we’re going to put our heart and soul into it." Commented Lisa Blue. Five years after the conception of the band, and numerous shifts in members, long time drummer Bob Schwecherl and keyboardist Dave Ryan returned after the albums release to complete the bands live lineup and the circle it was travelling. Now looking straight ahead to branching out of Southern California, the Grass looks to the West Coast to spread their sound. The Grass has shared the stage with some great band over the last few years. Some of the amazing talent includes Keller Williams, the Yardbirds, Dark Star Orchestra, Leftover Salmon, the Big Wu, Tim Reynolds, Merl Saunders, Sound Tribe Sector 9 and Rob Wasserman to name a few. Com let your ears hear what it’s all about… For more information check out the bands website at :

Band Members: Grampas Grass is made up of singer/guitarist John Malsberger, singer Lisa Blue, singer/guitarist Brett Davis, bassist Tim Kerrigan, drummer Bob Schwecherl, and keyboardist Dave Ryan
Influences: The Grass is influenced by so many bands it would take for ever to list, but here's some highlights: Phish, The Grateful Dead, Moe. The Allman Brothers, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, CCR, The Mother Hips, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, and Pearl Jam for starters.
Sounds Like: Emersed in the 70's rock, Grampas Grass has been likened to the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers. Yet while the soul of the music is older, the sound is fresh and full of energy. Modern bands like The Dave Matthews Band, Moe. and Phish tap into this source, and the Mother Hips coined the term that seems to fit them best, "California Soul".
Record Label: LazyDog Records
