Once in a great while, an artist comes along who reminds us why we fell in love with music. In an era when music of substance has become virtually extinct, Shawn Rivera has chosen the road less traveled. He comfortably straddles an incredibly vast range of influences from R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz, and Gospel, to Pop/Rock, Neo Soul, and World Beat. With captivating melodies, insightful lyrics, soulful delivery, and universal appeal, Shawn Rivera is destined to be counted amongst the worlds most beloved singer/songwriters.
Shawn began his musical journey in his hometown Philadelphia, studying elementary piano and singing in Central High Schools Gospel Choir. He also drummed for American Legion Post 227 Drill Team and performed as a backup dancer. An extraordinary student and intuitive musician, Shawn was awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious University of the Arts where he majored in Jazz Voice.
In 1996, Shawn and his LaFace/Arista R&B Quintet Az Yet would strike platinum with their first single, Last Night, which was featured in Eddie Murphy's film and soundtrack, The Nutty Professor. The single reached 1 on the Billboard R&B Charts and was certified Platinum in 1997. Under the tutelage of legendary producers David Foster and Kenneth "BabyFace" Edmonds, Shawn co-produced and arranged the groups' biggest hit, a soulful remake of Chicago's rock classic, "Hard To Say I'm Sorry". In 1998, Shawn's efforts would receive a Grammy Nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance/Group or Duo.
Shawn has performed and interviewed in over 40 countries and has appeared on numerous national television programs such as Good Morning America, MTV, and BET. He has also appeared in publications such as Rolling Stone, Billboard, Vibe, etc. Shawn continues to collaborate with numerous writers, producers, and artists.
Perhaps even more impressive than his prolific talent are his inexhaustible creativity and versatility of repertoire. Determined to continue the forgotten legacy of true artistry, Shawn Rivera is a powerfully charismatic visionary, heaven sent and hell-bent on achieving sublime musical timelessness.
