Born in Memphis, pop/country artist Alison Ray, wants you to listen to her music and pay special attention to her lyrics. Even with her charismatic looks and radio friendly voice, it’s the songwriting that drives Alison as an artist. All of the songs on her debut album “Downside Up,â€
were written by Alison and her writing partner, producer Marc Tanner.
With the formation of Tanner's Chime Entertainment, he brought Alison’s dreams to fruition, personally producing, "Downside Up." With upbeat pop/rock gems as well as moving ballads, Ray's life experiences took shape in songs encompassing themes of overcoming adversity, the good and bad of relationships to self-empowerment.
"I'm really a spontaneous and fun-loving person, so even when things are bad I try to find the positive perspective on the situation. This translates to my songs, so even in the worst of situations I try to relay a positive message and I knew that music was my passion from a very early age"
Her album begins with a song that gives homage to the power of radio on our lives, posing the question, "Does The D.J. Know." "It is about how a song can take you back," says Alison, "to a place or time when things were incredibly wonderful like my first boyfriend or a really sad moment; as if the disc jockey is playing with my emotions. The power of radio is huge!"
“There’s Always Tomorrow†is an emotional ballad of sincere hope. “When everything seems to be falling apart around you,†Alison explains, “I think all of us at some point feel misunderstood and disconnected, but you know deep down things will get better because when you wake up tomorrow is another day.â€
A powerful, uplifting song, “Love Is The Thing,†is not just about finding the love of her life but rather finding inner peace. “Feeling safe and at peace. All is okay now.†The song that actually deals with finding “a really great guy†is the fantasy-like “Reality Flies.â€
The playful “D.L.S. (Dirty Little Secret)†finds the empowered singer with the upper hand of knowing that her guy is lying or cheating, and she is really “pissed off.†“Feeling strong. You know his dirty little secret, and while the song may have a fun attitude, the relationship is definitely over!†Taking that theme one step further is “Good Goodbye.†“It is a pack of women in army suits getting guys for doing wrong in a tongue-in-cheek way,†she smiles. “I’m having fun with a serious moment in my life that I would think lots of girls can relate.â€
Alison believes in love at first sight as well as in destiny. “’What if I’ is about believing in love,†states Alison. We’ve all been hurt, but if we can be vulnerable and open our hearts, love will come. The song is about me caring for someone that is hiding behind his walls, but if he would just open his heart, he would discover how great love can be.â€
Her songs merge beautifully with film, with Alison already placing her songs in such television series as "One Tree Hill" and "Alias."
The passionate singer is ready to travel the world with her music and her incredible line band.
"The process of recording ‘Downside Up’ was life changing for me," reflects Alison. It was a magical moment of reflection and a feeling that I was really accomplishing something I had envisioned for so long.â€
