About Me

01/30/83-10/27/03
Baghdad, Iraq
You're forever in our hearts JonaGO BLUE!!
I am now involved with AmeriCorps American Samoa. I was a teacher at Samoana High School but I felt incompetent to teach such brilliant minds so I decided to resign, study for school, go back to teaching when I graduate and armed with new knowledge be able to answer these student's hard hitting questions. I am amazed at the capacity at which the students of Samoana are able to comprehend and grasp. Things I never came into until college these students are well aware of and they have kept in their back pockets for reference. The way they write blows me away. I cannot remember anyone when I was in high school who would just churn out literature the way these students do. I have come to understand in great depth the meaning of "co-creation" of knowledge because of these students. Perhaps because they are the "library generation" as we educators have dubbed them; the Harry Potter fanatics; the MySpace surfers; the students who rock out to Panic at the Disco on their iPods, while comfortably leafing through Emerson's Self Reliance. The ones that are in tune with life on a whole different level. I am proud to say that I was at one time in my life in touch with these young minds. The impossible seemed so realistic. The concept of time and space became tangible if only for a few minutes each day. If I could ever be proud of anything in life it would be this. I saw the future and it looks great. I love my Samoana kids. Go Blue!
Educate yourself enough So that you may understand the ways of other people
But not so much That you lose an understanding of your own
Try things PALAGI
Not so you become PALAGI
But so you may see the value of things Samoan
Learn to speak Samoan
Not so you sound Samoan
But so you may feel the essence of being Samoan
ABOVE ALL Be aware and proud of what you are
So you may spare yourself the agony of those Who are asking
WHAT AM I???
