...they call me bug lady...

About Me

I am an artist , a biologist and a single mom. I am open, independent, always smiling, nonjudgmental, one of the boys. As a kid, I made art, ran around in the woods and played with bugs all the time. I could never make up my mind what I wanted to do when I grew up, play with paints or animals, and I never had to. I have worked various environmental jobs...a wildlife biologist, zoologist, herpetologist and everglades restoration biologist. My artwork is inspired by Pop Art, mid-century modern design, bold color and a desire to create an appreciation for the most unloved of earth's beneficial creatures. My paintings are hard-edged, crisp and happy. The media in Tampa call me "bug lady" because I did an entire art exhibit, including a functioning 6 foot tall can of Raid, on the conservation of beneficial insects (or they just can't remember my name!). I am a member of BRAVA , a small collective of women artists in the Tampa Bay area and a former core member of Gala Corina , an artist collective also in Tampa. I get my animal fix by working at The Florida Aquarium as the Animal Registrar. I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel extensively, and I spent the summer of 1992 backpacking around the Middle East, much to my parents' dismay. I am a fifth generation Tampanian, and my family came over from Cuba via Espana in the 1800s and opened one of the original cigar factories in Ybor City. The loves of my life are my 5 year old, redheaded, budding artist, ballerina daughter and my sweet, goofy Siberian husky, Aleksi. I have recently found myself starting a new chapter in my life. Change is good. It makes you feel clean. I have had many ups and downs, but I have absolutely no regrets. It has all led to who I am today. :)
