The Castle is a recording facility designed by and for musicians. Located in the heart of New York's scenic Mohawk Valley, the building stated its life in 1926 as the Church of the Nazarene. Purchased by its current owners in 1999, it underwent 2 1/2 years of painstaking restoration both inside and out. The result is a unique blend of historical integrity, modern conveniences and state of the art recording equipment. The 42 by 42 foot live room boasts 35-foot wood ceilings and floors and its original flying buttresses. The architecture of the room acts as a giant bass frequency absorber, allowing it to be used by everyone from a full orchestra or choir down to a single acoustic guitar while retaining its unique big live room sound.
Looking out onto the live room is the equally distinctive control room. Featuring a Yamaha DM-2000 console, ProTools HD3, Genelec 15" studio monitors and an eclectic mix of vintage analog and digital outboard gear, this exceptional acoustical environment was designed by John Storyk. A registered architect and icon in the professional audio and video recording community since 1969, Mr. Storyk has been responsible for over 900 other world-class studios including projects for Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, Planet Hollywood, NYC's Lincoln Center, and Electric Lady Studios for Jimi Hendrix. His unsurpassed technical expertise and attention to the practical side of recording resulted in a perfectly tuned space that is both comfortable and versatile. To either side of the control room are two isolation rooms that can each accommodate a grand piano or full drum kit. Designed with band interaction in mind, there is a direct line of sight from one isolation room through the control room to the other. To complete the package, Castle has an extensive microphone closet, Genelec 5.1 surround speakers and 1/2" mastering capabilities.
Between takes, artists can relax, or even record, in the large private lounge, featuring a pool table, ping pong table, exercise equipment, video games, high speed internet access, full kitchen, bar and bathroom. The impressive array of current technology, in an environment filled with original fine art and antiques combine to make this a true destination studio.
