$7.00 Dee-1 is one of a small number of hip hop artists that specialize in making music that has a positive and uplifting message while still appealing to the masses. He grew up in New Orleans, home of hip hop's"Hollywood South" and the likes of Lil' Wayne and Soulja Slim. Although he admits to being exposed to the same circumstances as the artists that put New Orleans on the map, Dee-1 is determined to represent "The Big Easy" with a different viewpoint by using inspirational and thought provoking rhymes in his music. "I'll be honest, I needed a new hobby so I started rapping, but when I realized that I was good at it I started to take it seriously because I saw it as a chance to tell my story and be a voice for people who can relate to my music ," said Dee-1. His N'awlins accent, educated rhymes, clever metaphors, and catchy hooks have quickly made Dee-1 popular in clubs and on the streets in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. His locally distributed and independently produced mix tape entitled "Still We Rise" has listeners buzzing over his skills. In May 2006, Dee-1 was featured on the Pepsi Mic Smash video for New Orleans, alongside Master P, Lil Romeo, Silkk, and Foxx (of Trill Entertainment). Dee- 1 is also featured on the " Freedom Land" music video alongside five of the hottest underground artists from New Orleans (Dizzy, Mack Maine, K Gates, The Show, Nutt, and Young A).
