Eddie Haskill began listening to rap at the age of 7 back in 1988. He picked up the mic in 1995 and has been rhyming for the past 10 years. During the past decade, Eddie Haskill has gone through many changes in his music career as well as his personal life. Hes showed progress with each successive release but still realizes there are areas to improve upon. Where once he was comfortable spitting immature rhymes and chronicles of a lifestyle he didnt live, Eddie came across more comedic to his audiences. The release of If I Only Had Production in 2000 was funny but lacked in conceptual material, sound quality, and as the title states, original beats. Towards the end of 2001 Eddie dropped Verse-Atility. The album was a significant improvement over If I Only Had Production but still lacked original beats (mostly MP3.com producers) and was still mostly misogynistic material that was comedic but at times overbearing to the listener. The highlights on Verse-Atility were May, The Illest and arguable Eddies best song ever Where Im From, a detailed song about Buffalo which actually got radio play. As Eddie matured through college at RIT in Rochester, NY he realized that he needed to speak in a more intelligent manner with conceptual material and rap about the lifestyle he was living.
In 2003 Eddie dropped A Beautiful Rhyme, a 15 song concept album where Eddie put himself in movie characters and wrote from their perspective. The album was mostly received well from fans and showed a major progression from previous works. Notable tracks on A Beautiful Rhyme include Higher Learning, Radio Flyer, and Come Follow Me. Still, audiences new something was missing from the equation. Whether it be the average sound quality, the impersonal nature of songs not about the artist, or Eddies mediocre delivery and diction, the album was still something lacking. The lyrics on A Beautiful Rhyme are the shining part of the album and showed that Eddie Has Skill, especially as a lyricist. Every album gives Eddie something to work on for the next one so before working on the next project Eddie realized he needed to improve in a few areas. First, he needed to make an album all about himself and what he goes through in his life. Next, he needed to get original beats that were mixed down in a studio. Finally, he needed to work on his diction, voice, and delivery on the mic. The lyrics could be polished as well but fixing the other major issues would prove to be highly beneficial.
Enter The College Graduate. A full album from Eddie Haskill all about himself and what he went through finishing college, looking for a job, considering a move to NYC, and the lifestyle of corporate Eddie as his friends like to call him. Past girlfriends also make their way onto the album. Eddie has to write about what he knows. He cant speak about selling drugs, busting gats, and buying a million in jewelry because its a lifestyle he doesnt lead. He can only give you what he knows. In a way, The College Graduate is a like a resume in itself. Its a detailed first hand account of the past two years of his life discussing the many changes that have occurred. Undoubtedly, there will be things to learn from this album as well to make future releases even more successful. However, Eddie knows that this album is by far his most creative, factual, honest, and downright solid piece of music he has ever created. Eddie purchased his beats from the Discolobos (Brasby & Wagun), Tone @tlas, and DJ Daringer. Daringer handles the work on the tables as well. All the pieces of the puzzle have been put together so therefore, Eddie can no longer give a disclaimer when speaking of the albums he creates. It is what it is. No corners were cut to make it and the finished product was the best it could be considering the point that Eddie is in his music career.
The College Graduate is sure to turn heads and at the very least get respect for being one of the most introspective albums ever made. Only time will tell if The College Gradaute can propel Eddie past the state hes in today to more well known underground MC with a decent size fan base. Hes walking this road alone, the loner, but well see if its possible for one man with a love for creating his music to make a difference.
