Recent books:
THE KORAN - Pretty self-explanatory. If you wanna understand Islam, might as well start at the source. What I noticed right off, is that especially considering the context of time and place, The Koran is very progressive in it's message. As were all important works of scripture. It's also important to understand what's actually spoken in the Koran vs. the picture being painted by all sides in today's news headlines.
HIDDEN IRAN - PARADOX AND POWER IN THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC - Insight into the complexities of modern day Iran, including it's internal power struggles and it's relations with the "outside" world.
PALESTINE, A PERSONAL HISTORY - A personal history of Palestine as seen through the author's Palestinian family who has lived and been documented in the region for over 400 years. A 180 degree view of the region's history through Ottoman, British, and Isreali rule.
BEFORE THE DAWN (Recovering the Lost History of our Ancestors) - New York Times Science reporter's narrative bringing new genetic discoveries together with archeological and anthropological discoveries to explain the genetic roots of Human nature... religion, warfare, and trade; and how the human line slowly evolved from African apes to develop modern civilization and the novel faculty of language.
THE HISTORY OF THE END OF THE WORLD - The historical roots and source material of the Book of Revelation, and how it's shaped western civilization. Very interesting read.
FULL MOON RISING - fiction. Total fun schlock! :) sexy vampires and werewolves with secret government agencies. Doesn't get any better then this. LOL
CITY DHARMA - practical advice and dharma lessons for those living in any urban (or even suburban) environment. Traffic, cars, crowds, social life, asshole boses etc.

The Buddha. Boddhisattvas & Arhats. My friends. Normal everyday people who know to "step up" when it's time.
Marian Fisher (RIP) - 13 year-old Amish schoolgirl who volunteered to be shot first so the younger girls could have more time. Her sister Barbie, 11, asked to be "shot second". Barbie survived the shooting.
Anousheh Ansari - First Iranian-American into space and a "space tourist". Inspired muslim girls all over the world to reach for the stars. Her company also sponsored the Ansari X-prize. The competition a few years ago for the first company to build and test a reusable passenger rocket that was subsequently bought by "Virgin Galactic"
Nancy Pelosi - 1st female Speaker Of The House, California Congresswoman, and grandmother. Currently "sticking it to the man"

Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester - the first woman soldier since World War II and first woman in combat to receive the Silver Star (along with two other members of her unit, Staff Sgt. Timothy Nein and Spc. Jason Mike), for their actions during an enemy ambush on their convoy. Sgt. Hester led her team through the "kill zone" where she assaulted a trench line with grenades and M203 grenade-launcher rounds. When the fight was over, 27 insurgents were dead, six were wounded, and one was captured. (Now while I don't condone war, I chose her as an example of the fact that women can be strong warriors. We are born into what we are born into after all as is explained in the Bhagavad-Gita.)
Mother Theresa - (born Agnes Gonk Bojaxhiu) in Uskub, Ottoman Empire (now Skopje, in the Republic of Macedonia), at 18 she left home to join the Sisters of Loretto.
