Band Members: SQUARE DRUMS is whats up here at THE SQUARE DRUM COMPANY . They are Patent pending .In the design lab we were discussing the possibility of a SQUARE DRUM.
Heres the story...
The challenge was to Design A DRUM that WOULD sound better than a traditional round shelled drum with benefits that don't exist in tradition shells. BUT HOW ?Enter the Genius of simple thinking: We figure this: "Don't apply a bad design into it, and if it sounds good ,it will WORK LIKE A CHARM". Maybe we exceeded ourselves The worlds first and only drum set that incorporates the smarts of speaker cabinet technology. What's Novel You ask...and... this is the cool part: Everything! Mostly it's simplicity. Conserve space yet still attain more sound from a smaller diameter head. Just use 12's around the entire kit...they tune to the whole range. Use a 12" as a fx kick drum. Use it as an auxiliary floor toms. Notice the attack characteristics of the drum. One drum does a lot of things.The BIG DEAL IS....How MULTI-USE possibilities. ONE 12"double headed models cover the tuning range of what 5 round shelled drums to in a sequence tuning from high to low. Ever heard a 12'' drum sound like an 18" floor tom? These do it with room to spare.
DOES IT SOUND GOOD ? Yes. BUT WHY? " we believe its because of the capabilities of the shell combinations with the SQUARE DRUM DESIGN." " We are hearing professional sound engineers and music producers in production . You can easily tell they sound amazing large for the size heads you are using. We as a society of music producers, get the idea of an efficient drum/box of sound utilizing a speaker cab or so called a sub woofer. Its been their job (engineers,) to get all the frequencies to our ears through clear mixing using a SQUARE BOX with ROUND SPEAKERS in them. Remember the roland tr 808 groovey assy bass drum sound. Every one digs the sound of it . THAT SOUND was electronically built. Our SQUARE DRUMS do this ACOUSTICALLY without electricity! (Darryl Johnson) figured out how to make the drum/speaker you could hit with a stick, by hand or pedal, as a percussive devise. But it wasn't something he himself would have thought practical in a general since. Jimmy Crawford asked Darryl (an avid drummer of many years and a composer of classic to modern music for the sake of music) if.... they made square drums. Darryl thought this idea was funny too.He Did not think it would work well with square heads,..." it would sound bad, and ruin the integrity of a traditional cylinder shell ! " Jim said" what if you fixed that , that, and that, might it work then,....and Darryl thought about its shape, and drew a diagram that might work using existing drum technology. Too simple:but will it work? Jim had me make one. He chose acrylic for a nothing to hide visual prototype that could benefit with any added lighting ideas. That led to the Fact that it did work like a drum and it did more that we expected. reckless unknown creations were not our thing till now. They blow your mind upon hearing how well they rock. The look is mesmerizing and seems simply fatalistically retro. We wanna you to play them.They stack well...You can play them in a stack and that may come in handy someday. They tune up and down well. Use them as a floor tom, even a bass drum that rivals sub cabinets and drums much bigger than them. Use as rack toms from high to low...use standard 8"-10-12-13-14-15-16-18-20" heads. Whichever shell you choose you get the bigger sound from it. Model into use as an FX resonator that double or harmonize in octaves (imagine...stereo bass) I know its cool to have knobs on drums!. We port our Kicks now! The port is variable and adjustable. Choose a setting with a knob! No Electricity. They really mix in with traditional round drums .Don't wanna forget about the round drum now...its gonna stay. We just have a drum additive idea that gives us more. Very important to know they harmonize to your regular drum sets. These may inspire you to become unique or experimental with set ups. Use round kicks with square toms or vise versa. They are experimental in every way. Hit the top ...Hit the bottom. hit the side if you will. "no up" "no down". Set the kick drum up in a diamond pattern and you have a choice in....multi looks ! Fitted with your choice of hardware, you can have an entire set of square drums
Lets hear it for efficiency: Except for Bass drum use, a few 12'' double headed Square drums will make an efficient 10''-18'' Rack Tom or Floor toms . Remember it can also work as an effect drum. Experimental Stuff applied here.DO THEY COME IN WOOD ?
They sure do now. We made a Palm/ maple hybrid and its amazing. The kick weighs in at 38.2 lbs and its a fine piece art and sound. FULL BODIED LOW END. Racks rock period. Wood is GOOD. Like the WOOD, our acrylics are very durable. With the effect of lighting, they can saturate in any color or glow in the day. Endless beauty with a percussive concept behind it . They can be polished. Fixed if scratched. Elephants stand on them and pose. They are simply LOUDER than relative round drums their own size. This tickles everyone who plays them. WHO PLAYS THEM? Larger drums make more volume of course, yet an 18" double headed Square Bass Drum has the volume and pitch of a 26x14 round bass drum... Here , you may not need a microphone.
