About Me

Zach Whitney was born February 8th, 1973 in Columbus, Ohio. Raised on a 16 acre wooded farm, he quickly displayed a wide array of interests and talents. Showing an enormous love of music from an early age, Zach was influenced heavily by the music he heard around the house. At the Whitney house, the stereo was always on. Zach and his brother, Gabriel, bounced to the beat of many great folk, rock, and country artists. Favorites were John Prine, Bob Dylan, Jerry Jeff Walker, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springteen, John Mellencamp, Jimmy Buffett, and Arlo Guthrie. In his younger days, Zach swam and played soccer, studied piano, guitar, and even saxophone. Zach earned a scholarship to swim in college. First at the George Washington University, and finally at the University of Cincinnati, when Zach wasn't swimmming or studying History and Political Science, he spent endless hours teaching himself the guitar.Soon after that he began exploring the "real world" through his songwriting. In and around Columbus and Cincinnati, in college bars and pizza joints, (even in a laundromat) Zach honed his stage skills. Zach performed original material, Country and Folk material, around too many Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain clones, bad clones. In 1999 Zach moved to Austin, Texas where he still lives today. Austin is a perfect match for Zach's music and songs, which have been described by the founder of Madhouse! Records (and fellow singer/songwriter), Rich Restaino, as "music for the town drunk and college professors, hookers and housewives".Zach quickly began playing around Austin and the surrounding Hill Country, meeting and forging friendships with many wonderful musicians, songwriters, and artists. Currently Zach is close to completing his debut CD, "Some Far Off Somewhere", rehearsing with his band, and poised to conquer some windmills.Zach has been featured by the hugely popular Galleywinter.com as a "rising star of Texas Music". He's been showcased at Galleywinter's Texas Tuesday Nights and was a highlight performer at the 3rd and 4th Annual Greenfests. Zach's music has been featured as part of legendary Texas radio shows Humble Time and New Braunfels Live. Texas music legend Al Barlow once commented, "Zach, I'm just retarded about your music" (best compliment I've ever received). For more information about Zach Whitney and the Zach Whitney Show or for booking requests, please contact Zach at [email protected] or by calling (512) 294-5412.
