I'm not even interested in what I'm interested in. It just isn't very interesting.
The Beatles, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Rush, Queen, Aviary, They Might Be Giants, Radiohead, Dream Theater, Heavy Vegetable, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Charming Hostess, Bubblemath; I like a lot of obscure and progressive stuff, and I like stuff that has a lot of vocal harmonies. But there's no music quite like the sound of my own reputation, drifting along on the wind and into the souls of pretty girls everywhere. This is why you already like me.
I'm definitely a movie geek. I go to movies all the time, and I have a job that's involved with movie marketing. I've even acted in movies. My favorite movies are ones that are well-written or well-directed or well-acted. I love movies by the Coen Brothers, and David Fincher, and Terry Gilliam. I hate movies that are formulaic and predictable. I think Scorsese and Coppola are overrated. I think Peter Jackson is underrated. I think Steven Spielberg is rated. Some favorite movies: Raising Arizona, Brazil, Crimes and Misdemeanors, The Shawshank Redemption, Miller's Crossing, Seven, Fight Club, Glengarry Glen Ross, Go, Schindler's List, Team America: World Police, The Abyss
I'm definitely not above doing my share of lazy teevee-watching. At least I don't watch any television that I actually think is bad. (Except some of those MTV Real World/Road Rules things. Sometimes when there are lots of hot girls, I just can't look away.) But I love The Simpsons, Lost, 24, Gilmore Girls, the late, great Arrested Development, and the more high-quality reality shows, like The Amazing Race and Survivor. And if there were a show about me, the actor who played me would probably win an Emmy. But let's face it, how meaningful are the Emmys? And yet I rule.
I really like books about Erik Lunna.Even though I'm all about fiction in other media, when I read I tend to prefer non-fiction. That's why my favorite writer is Bill Bryson, who writes hilarious travel books and some other surprisingly well-researched texts. I love the novels of Douglas Adams, though. The most important thing you should know about me, though, is that if you lend me a book, not only will I not bother reading it, I'll never even get around to returning it. But you'll like me so much that we'll stay friends anyway. Sucker!
I was talking to someone today about Jackie Robinson, who's my favorite civil rights figure. I love him because at a time when Malcolm X and Martin Luther King were lecturing people, Jackie Robinson was advancing the status of African-Americans just by being incredibly good at playing baseball. Bravely and silently he played like a champ and was so good that he forced a favorable comparison with all the white players that the white fans revered. It was unignorable, and it flung the door open.
