The Cardamon Quartet is bringing the cultural frontier closer and redrawing the musical map. Synthesizing Latin and Mediterranean syncopation, Middle Eastern folk and classical both Jewish and Arab, the experiments of jazz and the pillars of popular and orchestral composition, the Quartet’s inventive performances follow the winding path of the immigrant, exile and explorer – picking up influences along the way and working with whatever inspiration is at hand. Rooted in tradition and reaching for musical horizons, the group ranges from dynamic original compositions to arrangements of Israeli folklore and Arabic classics. Delivering urbane yet earthy recitals of technical mastery and infectious feeling, the Quartet can create the reverence of the prayer service or raise the roof of a phantom peasant dance hall – all with the connection of human joy and hope. From influential clubs like fellow musical pioneer John Zorn’s The Stone to houses of worship like Wall Street’s progressive Trinity Church, the group captivates audiences with serious musicianship and celebratory spontaneity. (And there is more than one way to join in, as the band gives both concerts and educational workshops, to the experienced and inexperienced alike.) To see them live is to hear them as you never have, on a sonic odyssey even the band can’t predict. There is always a “new world,†and those who follow the Cardamon Quartet are sure to find it worth the trip. .
