Born and raised in Detroit, April 14th, 1976 Derek was introduced to funk at a very early age. Child birth. "My father [Ron Dunbar, Grammy Winner, Song Writer and Producer for Parliament-Funkadelic], was bumpin pure funk for me to kick to in my mamas belly". Blessed with an ear for music and rare ability to learn any instrument quickly, he grew up playing piano, trumpet, guitar, bass and any other instrument he could get his hands on. In 1995 at age 19, while bar hopping in Windsor, Ontario ( where it was legal to drink ), Derek and his friends entered an unfamiliar venue that was hosting a night called "Smooth". This would be his first taste of underground dance music, and opened his eyes to a world full of sensational music, people and surroundings. "This new atmosphere inspired me to dream. To look outside of what was right in front of me. To visit that unvisited fantasy in my mind. And to do it thru music."With funk as his foundation, he set out on a journey to discover just what it was that gave some tracks that "make you wanna get up on your feet and dance" factor, and why other tracks didn't. Hear him play a live set and you'll see the results of 10 years spent learning, spinning, dancing to and producing the most funkin dance tracks out there.Derek also has a different approach to the way he goes about "selecting" his music. Spend some time chatting with him, as he loves to share his philosophy on the seemingly challenging feat of finding the good tunes.
