Oh, acedia [Latin acedia "melancholy"] - emotional condition, which is often linked to independent music coming from Bavaria, Southern Germany. Especially it's become the trademark of bands like The Notwist, Console, Lali Puna - all coming from a small nest southwest of Munich. But now we move a little bit further up north to the homebase of Christian Schnall and Christian Winklhofer - both members of Spruce.
Because Bavaria's secret, steaming volcano of Pop probably soon won't be Weilheim anymore, but just this Regensburg, which in the last few years became the cradle of great musical talent. Among others the fabulous Beige GT, Sonny Jim and now: Spruce. All these musicians know each other in a town like this, inevitably run into each other, build networks and experiment with sound. Spruce have arrived, turned away from old metal days, the devil and destruction. Spruce now wrap small, soft tones with a vacuum of cotton candy and wall of sound. Whack! Now the keyword has been dropped. If I had no time and no mind I just would keep it like: early 90ies, Dream Pop, Slowdive, MBV. Period. Fortunately there is so much more to say.
This sounds rather kitchy, but it isn't. Imbedded in loops, beats and noise the exuberant, incomparable live shows of Spruce fill both, oldschool Shoegazers as well as new Dream-Poppers with enthusiasm.
That's the story. But what will the future bring? Spruce will keep their hearts open and continue to catch emotions in the form of situations, persons, places and memories, let all that take effect on themselves and then transform it into vibrations that we need so much in a world that seems to be ruled by fear. Spruce are on their way, but a certain feeling of desolation will stay and hopefully keep giving us this wonderful sweet pain. catch the sun...
