An electric jazz guitarist since she was a teenager, Erin Hobson joined the world of acoustic music only 5 years ago. Her distinct sound fuses Folk with a strong Jazz and Latin influence, laying the foundation for subtly powerful vocals that express lyrics so raw and honest; they are like reading pages from her diary. Combine that with the talent of an accomplished musician and you have a style that is unique and memorable. Dynamic and melodic with fresh originality, this is passionate, ear catching music.
A serious musician since the time she picked up a guitar, Erin studied diligently and always welcomed a challenge. Early influences included Jim Hall, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Charlie Parker. By age 14, she was already working with musicians twice her age and playing Jazz gigs with Steve Gravino, her local teacher. After high school, Erin attended SUNY New Paltz as a Jazz Performance Major and studied under Mark Dziuba and Tom Dempsey, before leaving for Los Angeles in 1996.
Once on the west coast, the jam band That Fat Frog was formed, a three-piece group with Dave Avenius on bass and Shay Godwin on drums. Erin's guitar skills were the main attraction, mixing Jazz, Rock and Latin styles into quirky songs with long, improvised solo sections. The band toured all over southern California, performing in countless coffee shops, restaurants, clubs and college campuses. Before their break up in 2001, That Fat Frog opened for the popular rock band Hoobastank at the Roxy in West Hollywood.
Without the backing of a full band, Erin bought an acoustic guitar and teamed up with bassist William Huyett to record her first full-length cd, The Good Stuff in 2002. As soon as it was released, the duo began touring the west coast while their LP received excellent reviews from online music columns and local papers. With her passionate lyrics, beautiful voice and skillful guitar playing, people couldn't help but become instant fans and the two were booked three to four nights a week, playing in the cafes of Borders Bookstores, coffee shops in San Diego, and various small clubs in the southern California area. After a few years of heavy exposure in L.A, Erin and Will left for New York to expand their grassroots following in 2003.
The move was a struggle and inspired much of the material on the 5-song demo, Far From Home, recorded and produced by Chris Cubeta and released in 2004. Since then, Erin has opened for the popular Indie artist Edie Carey, secured several residencies at restaurants, and has begun to play more upscale venues, like the Towne Crier in Pawling, NY. Performing mostly as a solo acoustic act now, music is Erin's full time job and love. She continues to write, record and perform her original material independently and is working on a new full-length CD that will be out later this year.
