The Spinning Tops

Sometimes the greatest success stories sprout from the tiniest of ambitions. When The Spinning Tops formed up in Paris, France around the summer of 2000, their aim was not to conquer english staduims and change the world. Instead, these five oddballs began plotting a rather more modest plan.In the shadowy corners of clubs and venues across their city Isabelle ..Cab.. Gueroult (drums), Phil Gueroult (guitar and vocals), Silvain ..Sissy.. Richelot (bass), Fabrice ..Babs.. (guitar and keys) Sehier and Jeff Guillot (lead vocals) decided to form a band that would harness the capability of being able to play every venue in Paris. Impressive eh? They achieved it without breaking sweat, but with it came a whole lot more.3 years down the line and the girl and boys have raided almost every venue in France, played to large crowds, won the european Emergenza Festival, made a couple waves on the french radios and signed a self produced debut album ..Milky Way Crossings...Spinnings.. story actually begins some time before they..d decided to name themselves after a weird gyroscopic top they found.Brothers and sisters Cab and Phil have seen their big brother Babs playing in various bands since the age of 15, before they decided to build their own band. They called on Jeff a french american student they met in Paris. Then came Sylvain who used to play the bass in a french fusion band and Babs.First rehearsals and first songs in english ..Cause we all grew up listening to english folk, pop and rock n roll. Besides Jeff is american and it was a good opportunity to try it out...At the same time, french radios brought on quotas saying that they were to air 60% of french speaking music. The Top..s, a french band, singing in english just didn..t fit in...We..d been trying so hard to fit in that we..d lost sight of what we were best at .. not fitting in... ..Not fitting in,.. it seems, involved crafting world-beating pop songs about looter-filled city streets at closing time and relationships-gone-wonky. Songs that could only have been written by observing the peculiarities of life in Paris as well as in Northern England, and songs that sparkled with the sound of Blur, Oasis to Teenage Fan Club.. Says Jeff,It struck a chord. First self-financed album, on French indie label LollyprodRight now, everybody wants a piece of The Spinning Tops.
