About Me
I INTRODUCE TO YOU...MR. JON DITTFURTH
Singer/Songwriter Jon Dittfurth has been playing in the music scene of Bryan/College Station for over ten years, mostly as a solo acoustic act. Jon’s style is reminiscent of Bruce Robison and Slaid Cleaves fused with Chris Knight and the Beatles.
Jon grew up in a musical household gaining musical knowledge and influence from his father Steve, a singer/songwriter as well. As a young, impressionable youth, Jon learned to appreciate the like of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Shake Russell, ZZ Top, and Nanci Griffith to name a few. Of course, his father’s original songs also struck a chord with him.
As he grew up, he taught himself guitar with a piece of paper his father wrote chords on for him. Throughout school, he knew he wanted to perform, but never really did it. He began college and started to write. After a couple of years, he decided to try an open mic at The 3rd Floor Cantina in Bryan, Texas. The first night there, he met another young songwriter by the name of Mike Ethan Messick. The two quickly hit it off and became instant friends. Over the years the two have played together (Jon has been his bass player), written together, and even lived together. Jon says it was Ethan who really ignited his interest in writing, and even contributes Ethan to pushing him to pursuing music as a career.
Jon has also served as a band member to many along his journey in music. Not only has he played bass and sang harmonies for Messick, but he has played in several honky tonk bar bands in the Bryan/College Station area such as: The Jill Neely Band, Back Forty, and The Rhinestones. In addition, he was part of the now defunct Round Rock based band Four Feet Down which was well on it’s way to the top of the Texas Music scene before disbanding in 2006.
Through all of years of playing for others, as well as going back to school to finish a degree, Jon’s playing solo subsided a bit, but he’s never quit. In fact, his songs came at a slightly faster pace for a while. Now, Jon has his sights set on music as isn’t ready to give up. “I don’t have to be a big star or anything. I’d honestly be happy if I could be just the songwriter. I’d die happy if one of my songs was recorded by a ‘major’ artist and put on their album. It doesn’t have to be a hit, it doesn’t have to be a single. Just on the album,†Jon says.
These days Jon is searching for his place. He’s got a group of guys put together to do “full band†shows, but as he says, “It’s mainly a cover band with 8-10 originals sprinkled in, and we don’t play a whole heck of a lot.†So to scratch the itch to play, Jon has joined up with Texas artist Ben Morris as the bass player for Ben’s Great American Boxcar Chorus. It has been a positive experience for Jon though; he is actually playing more solo shows than before now that he has teamed up with Ben. “Ben is a very driven guy, and he is constantly looking for the next place to play,†Jon says. This has given Jon the chance to not only open some of Ben’s shows, but also play song swaps all around the state with him
With all of the positive stuff beginning to happen as of late, Jon is starting to ride on high. So be sure to check him out as soon as you can, because once he gets the debut album out, which he’s itching to do, he’s going to be a lot harder to see in an intimate setting.
