Mercury Legion

Not pop punk, not hardcore punk, just rockin' punk

About Me

Bryce Fraser and Kurt Buske started the idea for Mercury Legion sometime around 1999 out of our desire to make a band with musicianship along the lines of RKL (Rich Kids on LSD), but also to add the element of diversity to our music. We wanted to have some hardcore elements/songs, some poppy stuff, some metal stuff -- no limits really, everything just needed to have killer musicianship. To date, Mercury Legion has made some memorable music, accomplished some awesome things we'll tell our grandchildren about if we live that long and met some cool people along the way. Mercury Legion recorded their first album, the epic Beauty is in the Eye of the Beer Holder, within a few months of formation. We played lots of local San Diego shows and then ended up befriending our long time musical hero and vocalist for RKL, Jason Sears (R.I.P.). Jason hooked us up as the one and only opening band for RKL at Velvet Jones in Santa Barbara. Shortly after this, we recorded an album with Jason Sears performing vocal duties. This album was recently formally released by Malt Soda Records (www.maltsoda.com) and simply called Jason Sears and Mercury Legion. Due to Jason's tragic and untimely death, this ended up being the last album he ever recorded. Very different than RKL in style as Jason wanted to do something a bit different. Jason's sense of humor and uncanny lyrical ability shines on this album. Mercury Legion then recorded another album called It's a Wonderful Life, which was released by Cinque Entertainment (www.cinqueentertainment.com) sometime around 2003 and did a short Southwest US tour in support of the album. Mercury Legion also appears on 2 tribute albums released by Malt Soda Records. A DRI tribute album called We Don't Need Society and an RKL tribute album called For Those About to Trip. Mercury Legion's most recent release (2007) is titled Art Sucks. This album was recorded by our guitarist, Matt Otavka, in a variety of our rooms and garages. We just wanted to see what we could do outside of a professional studio. This album is currently only available through the band and can be obtained by e-mailing us. $5 covers the cost of mailing and stuff and the album is yours. Otherwise, catch one of the band members around town and we'll hand one over to you for a whopping $0. Mercury Legion has had the chance to play with many great bands over the years and, although we don't play out much anymore, we'll probably never really disappear entirely until we die.
