First Man to Float in Space

About Me

I have been the first among firsts and second to last place. I am a space traveller and always smile when thinking of you, sweet Earth. I was born near Moscow, Russia on March 9, 1934. I joined the Soviet Air Force in 1955 and began my cosmonaut training in 1959. This was back in the heyday of Communist Russia as a superpower. On April 12, 1961 I became the first human to orbit our sweet planet Earth. My spaceship was called Vostok 1 and I orbited Earth for 108 minutes at a speed of 27,400 kilometers per hour. It was crazy! Words fail to describe the experience of orbit and the views of our unique blue planet from outside of the low Earth's atmosphere. The reentry to Earth was very exhilerating but I had to eject and land by parachute in order to survive. I can only hope that my adventure back in the day will help to inspire future explorers and to expand the boundaries of human understanding of our beautiful galaxy.
