"Al Haca collaborators Tolcha, Berliners hailing from the bass-obsessed Meta Polyp family, are part of a global movement determined to shake a polyglot sense of promise out of "urban" music by applying steadily increasing subwoofer pressure. "Void" channels splintered-wood glitches into a rippling dancehall pattern flecked with hand drums and Asian-influenced strings; in top form on the record, MC Soom T sticks to the low end of her range, weaving menacingly in and out of the tuned drums. It's not radically different from Timbaland and Missy Elliot's work from a few years back, but as club music goes, it still comes as a minor revelation. The buzzing, ragga-meets-electrohouse bounce of "What About Us" might be harder going depending upon your tolerance for its burnished, doubletracked vocal hook. Far better, the doubletime "Send Dem Kids to War" might be the only dancehall track that might feasibly find its way into a Justice set. Jahcoozi, Eva Be and Al Haca all offer remixes, of which the latter is the standout: uncomfortably balancing woozy triplets and a swung Schaffel-house rhythm, it sounds almost like one of Thomas Brinkmann's classic double-tone-arm variations." Deep down and dirty ------------------------Fresh out the box ----------The music of TOLCHA can be described as a postmodern soundclash of warm dub, dirty electro, grimey hip hop and future-dancehall with a punk-attitude. TOLCHA are presenting the different corners of future-minded music. However, it is not about the genre, but the vibe and the fact that it makes the neck move - and its gotta be bass heavy!
In 2003 Tolcha released their debut double 12inch STREET VIBES (distributed by grooveattack). This record featured great remixwork by the PUPPETMASTAZ, MS.JOHN SODA (including micha acher from THE NOTWIST) and a fantastically floor shaking version by LE HAMMOND INFERNO who ripped the biggest bassline of all times - the one of the White Stripes "7 Nation Army".
TOLCHA got massive rotation on many radio stations in germany and the press entitled TOLCHA as hot newcomers in the expanding electro-dub-scene.
Now, 2 years later, they have formed a little network of artists who share the same idea of crunchy future tech hip hop, mixed with digi-soul, grime and anything in between and out of the box: AL-HACA SOUND (klein/different drummer), THE TAPE (kyo/hamton) and JAHCOOZI (kitty yo/hamton) are only one of a few friends who give different interpretations of how hip hop and dancehall should sound in 2006!
By the middle of july 2005, the berlin dub magicians TOLCHA have released a second vinyl-joint called FOKUS. It was put out by TOLCHAS new label META POLYP. The 4-track-vinyl includes a wicked FOKUS-remix by the science-fiction-dancehall-superstars AL-HACA who are known for their astonishing releases alongside STEREOTYP on the austrian label KLEIN.
The track features RAS-TWEED from the UK who used to be a member of the legendary ROCKERS HIFI-crew (DIFFERENT DRUMMER).
Guest raps include polish New York/Berlin rapper RQM who has just released his solo project THE TAPE alongside Robot Koch from JAHCOOZI on KYO. He was also featured on some I-WOLF, AL-HACA and STEREOTYP-joints.
The track CRUSHED ICE features London/Berlin-female singer/rapper SASHA PERERA from the berlin elektro-blip-hop project JAHCOOZI (KITTY YO/HAMTON).
In June 2006 TOLCHA released their debut-album GESTALT on META POLYP.
Last but no least, TOLCHA has always been a live-band in the first place. So watch out for their mindblowing live-sets. TOLCHA will attack the audience with crowdrocking beats, strange visuals and a bit of that dub magic which is beyond comparison. TOLCHA connect turntables with a sampler, drums with percussion and a fat bass with no guitar. TOLCHA are not a rocknroll band but heroes anyway!
