When Mark Rae started Grand Central back in 1995, it was in response to the bustling hive of activity that his Manchester record shop Fat City had turned into. The likes of Aim, Only Child and Riton constantly had their heads in the crates looking to sample old records for new beats and breaks. At some point, probably whilst looking out over a rain-soaked Oldham Street, it occurred to him that he had established a breeding-ground for talent...

Since then, the label has grown to a roster of eighteen artists, from Rae & Christian to the breaks of Aim, via Fingathings electro-clash hip hop, beat-master Jon Kennedy, DJ/producer extraordinaire Boca 45 and many more. Our artists consistently surprise us with their innovation and 2006 will ensure that loftier heights continue to be scaled.

A roster the size of Grand Centrals cant be in place without a successful legacy. We are proud to include such genre-defining albums as Rae & Christian's Northern Sulphuric Soul, Aim's Cold Water Music, Only Child's Solitaire and Riton's Homies & Homos in our back catalogue, not to mention countless classics from a discography which totals over 750 tracks. Our artists have remixed, produced and worked alongside The Human League, Jay-Z, Run DMC, Texas, Dinah Washington, De La Soul, Moby, Public Enemy, The Pharcyde, Souls of Mischief, Jeru The Damaja and, most recently, Scissor Sisters and Kylie.
