About Me
Andre Matos grew up in his hometown of São Paulo, Brazil. Matos began his musical education at the age of ten, when he received his first piano from his parents. As a teen, he would gather with his friends to listen to their favorite bands. Soon they began learning to play the music too, and Matos joined his first band, Viper. The band first performed on 8 April 1985, when he was just thirteen years old. That same year, they recorded their first demo tape, "The Killera Sword".
Within a short while, Viper had become a phenomenon in the Brazilian heavy metal scene. Though Matos continued on vocals, he had no pretention of remaining a vocalist, a role he assumed only because he had the "least poor vocals of all of them", and because he physically resembled Iron Maiden's vocalist, Bruce Dickinson. His instruments of choice were always the piano and keyboards. Matos left Viper when the band began to change its musical style. He had become interested in classical music, and felt that his musical vision had begun to diverge from that of the other band members, who wanted to focus on heavier, more "crude" music.
After leaving Viper, Andre went back to school and finished his education in music, specializing in orchestral conducting and composition.
In 1991 Angra was formed, and with the first album, "Angels Cry", released in 1993, the band became famous in Japan and Europe. Later "Holy Land" and "Fireworks" were released. Angra's style evolved from a Helloween-inspired melodic speed metal to a unique blend of heavy-metal, classical music and traditional Brazilian influences which brought them worldwide critical appraise.
Andre took part in a worldwide contest for replacing Bruce Dickinson in Iron Maiden and was in the Top 3 finalists alongside James LaBrie and eventual winner, Blaze Bayley.
In 2001, he left the band Angra alongside the rhythm section composed of Luis Mariutti (bass) and Ricardo Confessori (drums) because of a disagreement with guitar players Rafael Bittencourt and Kiko Loureiro concerning the band's management. The two guitar players then recruited Edu Falaschi (vocals), Aquiles Priester (drums) and Felipe Andreoli (bass), and kept the name "Angra". Andre stayed with Angra's former rhythm section and recruited Luis' brother Hugo Mariutti on the guitar : together they formed the band Shaman (who had to change names to Shaaman for legal reasons) and wrote two albums: Ritual (2002) and Reason (2005).
In the beginning of 2000, Andre developed the side project Virgo, along with German guitar player and producer Sascha Paeth. At the same time, he participated in Avantasia, the metal opera, playing a main role on two albums.
After leaving Shaaman along with the Mariutti brothers, Andre now walks his own path in a solo band. For this ultimate task, he counts on excellent musicians: the well-known trio Luis Mariutti (bass), Hugo Mariutti (guitar) and Fabio Ribeiro (keyboards) in addition to guitarist Andre 'Zaza' Hernandes (former Angra) and Eloy Casagrande (17-years-old prodigious drummer).The first Andre Matos solo album, 'Time To Be Free', released in August 2007, is already a great success all around the world. The worldwide live tour is up to come.
Andre is currently starring the leading role in the Rock Opera ‘Tommy’ (The Who) with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and Choir.
Andre Matos naît et grandit à São Paulo ; c'est à dix ans qu'il débute la musique avec le piano. A l'âge de treize ans il rejoint son premier groupe, Viper, groupe de heavy metal. Le groupe se produit pour la première fois le 8 avril 1985 ; la même année est enregistrée leur première maquette de démo, nommée The Killera Sword.
En peu de temps, Viper devient un phénomène du paysage musical brésilien. Andre qui n'était que pianiste devient vite chanteur, notamment grâce à ses similitudes physiques et vocales avec le chanteur d’ Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson. Il enregistre avec eux deux albums, Soldiers of Sunrise en 1987 et Theatre of Fate en 1989, avant de quitter le groupe dont le style musical évolue dans un sens qui ne lui convient plus – davantage inspiré par la musique classique, Andre se sent diverger des autres membres du groupe qui recherchent un son plus ‘heavy’ et plus brutal.
Andre met alors en pause le metal pour finir ses études et perfectionner sa formation musicale, acquérant une spécialisation de Chef d'orchestre et Compositeur.
En 1991, naît le groupe Angra qui va révéler sa voix au monde. Le groupe initie un style unique, le metal symphonique à musicalité brésilienne, mêlant les inspirations du speed metal mélodique de Helloween, de la musique classique et des percussions brésiliennes. C’est à cette époque qu’Andre Matos est pressenti comme futur chanteur pour Iron Maiden, son nom figurant parmi les trois finalistes. Mais le groupe Angra débute une carrière qui sera brillante, menant Andre dans des tournées dans le monde entier et totalisant plus d’un million d’albums vendus.
En 1993, le premier album d’Angra, Angels Cry, connaît un fort succès en Europe et au Japon, et Andre montre sa technique grâce à la reprise de la chanson ‘Wuthering Heights’ de Kate Bush, morceau réputé très technique vocalement et très aigu. L'album Holy Land (1996) apporte au groupe sa gloire au Japon, puis en Europe, suivi d'un live en France : Holy Live. Après un troisième album en 1998, Fireworks, moins bien accueilli mais tout aussi technique pour Andre, il décide de quitter le groupe en 2001, suivi par le bassiste Luis Mariutti et par le batteur Ricardo Confessori, à cause de divergences avec les deux guitaristes d’Angra.
Une troisième ère s'ouvre avec Shaman (par la suite écrit Shaaman pour des raisons légales), formé par Andre avec Luis Mariutti et comme guitariste le frère de Luis, Hugo Mariutti. Mêlant des influences progressives, mélodiques et brésiliennes sans perdre de sa puissance, l'album Ritual (2002) possède une identité bien particulière qui apparait plus clairement encore dans le DVD RituAlive sorti en 2007. L'album suivant du groupe, cependant, (Reason) ne perça pas autant qu’espéré ; la production fut mauvaise (annulation des dates) et le groupe se sépara en 2006, laissant dans Shaaman Ricardo Confessori.
Depuis cette date, Andre Matos se consacre à un projet solo, Andre Matos Band, avec Hugo et Luis Mariutti. Son premier album solo, Time to be Free, fut produit en août 2007 et sortit en France le 25 Février 2008. Qualifié de ‘best-seller’ au Brésil, produit dans plus de 20 pays d’Europe et récoltant les meilleures critiques dans la presse spécialisée, Time to be Free consacre sans aucun doute la plénitude d’Andre Matos en tant qu’artiste. Pour ceux qui n’auraient pas encore pu en juger par eux-mêmes, pas d’inquiétude : une tournée mondiale aura lieu prochainement !
Actuellement, Andre Matos joue au Brésil le rôle principal dans le Rock Opera ‘Tommy’ (the Who) avec les Chœurs et Orchestres Symphoniques de Sao Paulo.
Andre Matos a également mené des projets parallèles, notamment avec Sascha Paeth (Virgo), l’actuelle tournée Avantasia avec Tobias Sammet, etc. Il sera aussi présent sur le prochain album du groupe The Clairvoyants et fera deux concerts avec eux en octobre prochain.
