"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see." Edgar Degas
Kelly began using her illustrative skills in 1989 after moving to Chicago from Los Angeles. The city seemed to ignite her creativity in a way she had not experienced before. Kelly started her career as a textile artist. "I designed neckwear and scarves for corporations. I had to put out two designs a day. As a result, I learned how to work under pressure and deadlines." After taking a break to raise children, Kelly began painting on canvas. "It felt good to paint on a large scale - a real departure from the tight necktie designs I was doing." She is most strongly influenced by works of mid-20th century artists, particularly the Abstract Expressionists. She works in mixed media, primarily acrylics continuously seeking a balance between soft, hard and textures. Fearless in experimentation, Kelly combines, infuses and marries the most unlikely. Not one to adhere to strict rules, her paintings are dichotomous. "I like painting in abstract, because it is only defined by the viewer. Whatever speaks to you, whatever you see is true for you." This is kindred to the artist's nature. "Reality is personal and defined only by you. You may see the art through a particular perspective, yet ten years from now it might appear differently. I want my art to evolve." "So the piece evolves and changes as much as you do." Kelly allows her work unfold as she weaves symbols, colors, movement and some of her own poetry onto the canvas.
"I relate to music. Music is the single most inspiration for me. I play it (very loud) while I am painting. It can be anything, I just need it to move me, through me, in me, on me.....then onto the canvas. I feel art imitates music in that just as in music; lyrics can take on a whole new meaning to the listener even though they meant something else entirely to the lyricist at inception. I want you to relate to my art in the same way...find the meaning, find the inspiration." "I desire that my work touches you mentally, emotionally, intellectually, physically, spiritually and of course.....visually."And.....if you are an artist......start creating, get to work!!

My Interests

Art then music. I am happiest when I am creating in general, whether I am painting, cooking or entertaining. I am a numerology buff, been reading up on that for years!! I enjoy reading anything that will further my personal evolution. I think I was a monk in a prior lifetime ;^).....I treasure time alone to my thoughts. My kids, what they do, how they think, where they will go in life. I tend to like quiet places, but enjoy getting out and people watching. I am very passionate about my art....that is sometimes misunderstood. I am up for trying new things, meeting interesting people. I tend to wear things out..clothes...music...movies...like watching or listening or wearing until they become part of me...a second skin or second nature. I love a good dry sense of humor; if you can make me laugh, you're in! Strong iced tea, Hot Sake', Chimay, sushi, Greek food, authentic Mexican food...yum! Fresh cherry tomatos in the garden, right off the vine...eat 'em with a salt shaker in one hand! Anything off the beaten path, if you are unusual,I like you. Sincerity, honesty and people who are direct...too draining trying to constantly figure someone out...if I have to spend a lot of time guessing about you..no fun ;^( Like things easy and even. When I travel, I like to get away from the "touristy" spots and discover the real culture of the country, definitely one to go in the opposite of mainstream. Tell me what the majority does, and I venture the other way. My friends and family consider me "liberal" ;^) Studying and finding the deeper meaning, movies, spiritual books, learning, being engaged in life in general. I believe everyone matters....no matter what. Check out my website www.kellygillum.com

I'd like to meet:

Number 1, anyone interesting. I like people watching and finding humor wherever I can. It's usually not far away! I'd also like to meet Picasso, Kandinsky and Einstein.

Music:

Always....Marvin Gaye..all time fav..What's Goin' On???Right now...John Mayer, great lyracist and guitarist. I love that he paints a picture with his words. Maybe he'll hit the "always" list. My taste is pretty eclectic and runs the gamut. When I paint I like to play something that moves me. Usually, it is Lenny Kravitz when I paint...lately I've been inspired by the music of...Kyle Brown, Dean Groombridge, Josh G., Alejandro Escovido and NIKO and of course anything with a dirty bass!!!

Movies:

I just saw Freedom Writers and Death of a Funeral..loved both for different reasons. Paris je t'aime and Once, both of which I liked a great deal and would recommend. Once is a fabulous film for any artist or musician, it is very inspiring. I liked Bridge to Tarabithia, Crash, Slevin, Waiting for Guffman, New York Stories (especially Life Lessons) The Moderns, Paperhouse...saw it at the Chicago Film Festival in 1990...very artsy! Bottle Rocket, After Hours, Running With Scissors (funny, in a sick way), The Royal Tennenbaums.

Television:

Arrested Development is my all time favorite, I could watch it over and over (sometimes do). I like The Office, 30 Rock, and of course, SNL. I'm not much on regular tv, I watch to relax....or use it as background noise.

Books:

The Alchemist, The Secret, The Four Agreements and I loved A Widow for One Year....

Heroes:

Those who came before me to clear the path, whomever they may be....great artists, great teachers, great mothers....great fathers. Thanx daddy for being who you were, for the passion, the commitment and making your mark on the world, thank u!!! my grandmother, my mother and anyone who can make anything out of nothing !!
