Aaron Ali SHAIKH - alto saxophone
Shaikh is the son of a Pakistani (Sindhi) immigrant and was born and raised in Cleveland, OH. He began studying the piano when he was three. After a decade on the piano he began playing the saxophone. In 2000, Shaikh moved to New York City to study at the New School University where he has had a double major: Jazz and Psychology. Since then he has had the opportunity to perform and record with many including Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, Jackson Moore, Brandon Evans, Jackson Krall, Dynamite Club, Chris Jonas and Leland Scott Davis. He has also had the opportunity to tour abroud presenting music to audiences in Japan, Australia and Canada. He recently went on a tour of North India. While there he developed a better understanding of their music, language and narrative styles that he has been incorporating into his own music since he began studying improvisation. He has recorded for Sachimay records.
Nate WOOLEY - trumpet
Born in 1974, Wooley grew up in a Finnish - American fishing village in Oregon. He has spent the rest of his life trying to musically find a way back to the peace and quiet of that time by whole-heartedly embracing the space between complete absorption in sound and relative absence of the same. He began playing trumpet professionally at age 13 and has studied with Ron Miles, Art Lande, Fred Hess and Jack Wright. Nate currently resides in Jersey City, NJ and performs with Matt Moran, Reuben Radding, Take Toriyama, Steve Swell, Tatsuya Nakatani, Anthony Braxton, Bhob Rainey, Alessandro Bosetti, Herb Robertson, Kevin Norton, Tony Malaby, Randy Peterson, Tim Barnes, Okkyung Lee, Assif Tsahar, and other improvisational luminaries. He has recorded for Hat Hut, Cleenfeed, Hopscotch and Rossbin records.
Tom ABBS – acoustic bass
Tom Abbs has been performing and recording in a variety of contexts for the past 20 years. A Seattle native, Tom relocated to New York in 1991 where he studied with such masters as Reggie Workman, Buster Williams, Joe Chambers, Junior Mance, Chico Hamilton and Arthur Taylor. Tom has developed a driving percussive style on the bass and his fluid tuba style has shed many of the instrument’s sluggish connotations and transformed it into a soaring solo and sharply percussive groove machine. Abbs' versatility and depth as a player has kept him busy backing up the likes of Lawrence "Butch" Morris, Charles Gayle, Daniel Carter, Steve Swell, Roy Campbell Jr., Sabir Mateen, Jemeel Moondoc, Assif Tsahar, Borah Bergman, Billy Bang, Andrew Lamb, Warren Smith and many others. He has recorded for Hopscotch, Delmark and CIMP.
Nasheet WAITS – drums
born 1971 in Manhattan, New York, played in Prize Winner Andrew Hill's JAZZPAR 2003 Nonet and in the JAZZPAR 2004 Quartet with Jakob Dinesen, Ben Besiakov and Eddie Gómez. His interest in playing the drums was encouraged by his father, Frederick Waits, who over the course of his career played with Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner and many other jazz legends. Nasheet Waits graduated with honors from Long Island University receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Music. He also studied with percussionist Michael Carvin and added influences from his father, as well as mentor Max Roach who hired him as a member of the percussion ensemble M’Boom. The first major gig was when reedman Antonio Hart asked Waits to originate the percussion chair of his first quintet in 1992. Waits remained a standing member of Hart’s ensembles, recording three albums and touring. Besides being a member of various bands led by Andrew Hill, Waits has been member of Fred Hersch’s trio, and Jason Moran’s Bandwagon, the latter proclaimed as one of the most exciting rhythm sections in jazz of this millennium. Nasheet Waits’ recording and performing discography is developing into a who’s who in Jazz, boasting stints with Geri Allen, Hamiett Bluiett, Jaki Byard, Ron Carter, Steve Coleman, Joe Lovano, Jackie McLean, Joshua Redman, Wallace Roney, Jacky Terrason, Mark Turner and many others. He has recorded for Blue Note, Warner Brothers, Criss Cross, Palmetto and others.
