About Me

"I dwell in shining Ithaca. There is a mountain there,
high Neriton, covered in forests. Many islands
lie around it, very close to each other,
Doulichion, Same, and wooded Zacynthos--
but low-lying Ithaca is farthest out to sea,
towards the sunset, and the others are apart, towards the dawn and sun.
It is rough, but it raises good men."
- Homer, ..Odyssey..
ITHAKA
As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon - don't be afraid of them:
you'll never find things like that one on yourway
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon - you won't encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front ofyou.
Hope your road is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbours you're seeing for the firsttime;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfumes of every kind -
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from theirscholars.
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you're destined for.
But don't hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you're old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you've gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvellous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaka won't have fooledyou.
Wise as you will have become, so full ofexperience,
you'll have understood by then what these Ithakasmean
Constantine P. Cavafy
i like poetry and writers of all sizes and shapes, however, i do discriminate.
i hate war. love peace. i hate anything that tries to pass for peace. in my perfect world no one would be unkind (least of all me) ... ever. and the one i love would love me back ... forever and ever. and would know what i like and don't like even before i figure it out myself. and would put up with my tantrums and idiot ways ... and would love me all the more for them.

My Country Awake
Tagore
Where the mind is without fear and the head held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by Thee into ever-widening thought and action;
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

someone who has a passion for photography, poetry, music, living, and all the rest

Duke Ellington Billy Strayhorn
This performance was in 1965. Billy wrote Duke's signature song while he was on his way to Duke's house for an audition ... instructions on how to get there: take the "a" train. Billy was going to next audition for Count Basie if the Duke didn't hire him. Billy wound up as Duke's right hand man, conducting the band in his absence, orchestrating, etc. As a Black Gay Man, Billy was content to stay out of the spotlight and do his thing.

Without a Song

(Vincent Youmans, Billy Rose, Eduard Elisa)

Without a song the day would never end
Without a song the road would never bend
When things go wrong a man ain't got a friend
Without a song

That field of corn would never see a plow
That field of corn would be deserted now
A man is born but he's no good no how
Without a song

I got my trouble and woe but, sure as I know, the Jordan will roll
And I'll get along as long as a song, strong in my soul

I'll never know what makes the rain to fall
I'll never know what makes that grass so tall
I only know there ain't no love at all
Without a song

I've-a got my trouble and woe and, sure as I know, the Jordan will roll
And I'll get along as long as a song, strong in my soul

I'll-a never know what makes that rain to fall
I'll never know what makes the grass so tall
I only know there ain't no love at all
Without a song
