"I never dreamed in a million years I would have a parent in prison. When I visited my father for the first time in prison it was very, very tough for me. I can't imagine how tough it is for a young child." --Cody McCarver
A few years after Cody McCarver's father was incarcerated, he began reflecting upon how it affected him and decided to try and give something back. He started working with the Big Brothers and Big Sister's of America "Amachi Program." This is a program for children with inmate parents that provides mentors and a support network to help them adjust to life with an incarcerated family member.
Cody has written and recorded a song entitled "Through Gods Eyes" that speaks of his parents, Bill and Delilah, and tells the story of why Bill is in prison. It takes a lot, I'm sure, for Cody to put this very personal story out there so openly. Having written and recorded "Though Gods Eyes", he is now in the process of filming a music video for the song.
In January of 2006, Cody began efforts to go to the prison where his father is being held to film a documentary on the effects of incarceration on inmates' families. Due to the lengthy sentence his father received, this proved to be a very difficult task. The State Prison system felt like his father was a security or escape risk and was reluctant to allow a film crew into the prison. So, for the next two years, Cody worked patiently with prison officials to lay the groundwork for the documentary.
THEN, in May of 2008, word came down that he would be allowed in, and he scrambled to assemble a film crew on short notice. ... He was FINALLY able to shoot what HE HOPES will be a life changing experience for anyone who sees the film, especially children. Cody hopes this piece will help show children in America that prison is no game, and that just because you have a parent that is or has been in prison, it does not mean you are destined to go there yourself. The Documentary is in the editing stage and will be finished later this year.

Almost 70 percent of children in America who have an inmate parent will likely end up serving time in prison themselves. Cody McCarver's father has been incarcerated for 10 years. He is trying to give back by telling children that "just because" they have a parent in prison doesn't mean they must go there themselves.
