About Me

Over 40,000 non-human animals are housed on the UC Berkeley campus and exploited in research

Fifty percent are mice and 40 percent are cold-blooded animals, such as amphibians, fish and reptiles. Nine percent are other rodents — rats, hamsters, guinea pigs and wild rodents — while the remaining 1 percent is comprised of rabbits, cats, non-human primates, hyenas, birds and invertebrates.

Television:

"UC Berkeley is currently constructing the 200,000-square-foot Li Ka-Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences. This project will construct a facility to house interdisciplinary programs in new fields of research on the molecular mechanisms of disease, with a focus on cancer, the brain, infectious agents and stem cell biology. The building site encompasses the site of the recently-demolished Warren Hall on the west edge of Campus at University Avenue and Oxford Way. The approximate size of the facility will be 200,000 OGSF. The building will also provide a major (seventy percent) expansion of the Northwest Animal Facility , a brain imaging center including space for MRIs, as well as other imaging equipment, a teaching laboratory, a 300-seat auditorium and 80-seat classroom, small conference rooms, interaction spaces and a limited number of faculty and staff offices."
