MUSIC - I started playing guitar at 16 and have always loved singing. Finished High School, started working in a music shop, did four years at University Studying Graphic Design, went back to work in a record store (Real Groovy, Wellington) and decided to make music for a living...I got my start in bands (Mainly fronting STYLUS77/SEVEN SUNS), now I produce my own music as a solo artist and collaborate with many friends from around the globe...I attended the RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY in Seattle 2005, made some music and some new friends. Released a solo EP NOISE IN YOUR STEREO" in New Zealand to take with me to the academy to show people my musical direction...Was a part of the "Return of FLY MY PRETTIES" in 2005. The project brought together many different songwriters and musicians from bands in NZ and put together a live show which was recorded and filmed for live CD/DVD album which was released later that year. My song "Get Out" was definitely a crowd pleaser and convinced me to quit my band and start a new musical journey...2006 was spent touring with FLY MY PRETTIES and doing regular gigs around town with friends. Then came a band I created that was the spawn of these new ideas. With me behind the MPC and playing guitar, alongside good friends Pet Johnson and LP (aka Lisa Preston) we started jamming as SONS OF PUHA. Influenced by Hip Hop beat makers and soul singers we jammed out live imrovised sets at local spots in Wellington...With my MPC as the centre of attention in my bedroom studio and my acoustic guitar not far from it I wrote and recorded my debut album. "OUR PLACE" was released on May 1st 2007 in New Zealand on Loop Recordings Aot(ear)oa. The album was written, recorded, sung, played and produced by myself with the acception of some bass guitar by close friend Rio Hemopo (TRINITY ROOTS, SCRIBES OF RA...) and some horns from an old SEVEN SUNS recording.2007... I moved to London. I have just finished touring with FAT FREDDYS DROP as one of their backing singers. The UK/Europe tour was a great start to my move abroad and meant playing sold out shows around the UK (London's Astoria (singing alongside Alice Russell), Bournemouth, Nottingham, Glastonbury), Garance Reggae Festival in Paris and Fritz Club in Berlin. We also did some recording for an I-Tunes EP for Freddys at RAK Studios in London (Look out for that release soon!)...So... I'm about to settle into a new life, new music, new people and new things... What better way to start off by letting you know about my friend ISHFAQ's new 12" out now!Check out ISHFAQ's new 12" featuring me on vocals on the track "Change". Check out Ishfaq's page to listen!!!Scribble 003 : Ishfaq - The Change EpA1. Change - (Feat. Adi Dick)
A2. Call the Boss - (Feat. Kissey Asplund)
B1. Acuzion
B2. Clap that - (Feat. Chef)
Scribble records third release comes from the multi–talented musical nomad “Ishfaqâ€. His debut EP is a blend of broken soul, Nu-jazz and Hip-hop. Featuring the sensuous vocal talents of Adi Dick, Kissy Asplund and The Chef, this record oozes soul appeal.
‘Change’ is a modern Stevie type affair, while ‘Call the boss’ introduces The Chef’s raw rhymes with catchy hooks from Kissy. ‘Clap that’ brings us into jazz territory with its meandering flutes and punchy Rhodes business. While ‘Acuzion’ on the other hand is a spaced out nu-carnival banger. All instruments played by the one man band that is ‘Ishfaq’. This EP is one for the summer.
