About Me

Maurino Alarcón was born 17 July ’82 in Amsterdam. His parents, both Chilean, arrived in The Netherlands as political refugees in 1973, fleeing for the coup d’etat by the Pinochet regime. Brought up in the South-East of Amsterdam, Maurino at a young age got in touch with all kinds of cultures and therefore all kinds of music. Growing up he is strongly influenced by music and art inspired by political ideals and goals, set by left wing artists from Chile and Latin America, like Victor Jara, Quilapayun, Inti Illimani, Silvio Rodriguez. “Always with one leg on each side of the ocean”, is how he describes the feeling he always has present.Around the age of 10, he followed 5 years of classic guitar lessons, which he loved, but feeling the pressure of weekly studies and worse, homework, he stopped and left the guitar to rest in the corner of his room. During high school his interests strongly developed towards painting, poetry and music which he pursued passionately. First he formed part of a Hip-Hop formation in which the 3 members took part in a growing feeling of the necessity of musical and therefore cultural movements. This group was essential for the development of the music he makes today. The group started to grow towards live music, and later discovering the instruments and their capacity to use their voices in other ways than just rappin’. In 2005 this formation, called Inti Huatana, grew apart concerning their visions of music for that time being, and they decided to grow on separate tracks to probably the same goals. From that point on the music written by Maurino grew into the shape it has today. He armed a small studio, and taught himself to produce his own music with the computer, guitars and vocals. By being able to listen to his own work he could for the first time, channel it better into the music he creates today. From this point on, he learned (and is still learning), to use his “certainly-not-angelic-but-in-a-way-special” voice and shape it into the specific sound he wants. He has a clear vision of his music and the reason to play and create. “For the time being, this is my way to contribute to the struggle to liberate all people from tyranny. The influence music can have, and the platform it brings, could prove to be essential to help grow the consciousnesses of el pueblo, the people. Politics and Art are part of everything on so many levels, and I believe in making a real difference with my music and my words.”Around a year ago he joined forces with a talented guitar player and good friend, Jouke Schwarz, ironically a Dutchman brought up in Chile. With his help and support they have been able to form the live interpretations of the studio work. In the last 3 months Timon Raven joined the group with his subtle tunes on the keys. They now form the band TenTemPies, which means Hold Your Stand.Currently TenTemPies is formed by: Maurino: vocals, guitars/ Jouke: guitars/ Timon: keys/ Adrian: percussion/ Joris: Cajon/ Nathan: bass
