At a young and tender age a petite little girl stands in the middle of the room. She closes her eyes and opens her mouth. A voice to reckon with emerges with the words:
"When I... had you.... I treated you baaaaad, and wrooong my dear...."
The Jamaican/African American child of a young couple was belting out the beginning excerpt of En Vogue's "Hold On", (which sampled the Jackson 5's "Who's lovin You) for her mother's friends.
As her mother looks on proudly, her mother's friends stare with mouths wide open and eyes bulging, as they look upon the child.
Visually, she is innocence. She wears a skirt to her knees, black sweater with a teddy bear embroidered on it, babydoll shoes with lace socks, and burgundy glasses framing her face. But the sound that resonates from her small frame is that of a grown woman.
She appears strong, in control, and sure.
No one speaks for a few moments after she finishes her song. They all eye the young one, and she smiles, and says: "I really like that song when mommy sings it".
Sudden shrieks come from all over the room as the women all crowd around the little one and her mother. They sang praises of "oh what a blessing the lord has given her" and "that chile' sounds better than me!".
The little star had been exposed.
And now....
Some 10 years later...
She is sharing her music with you.
