About Me

MIA SHEARD Over the course of three albums, Toronto’s Mia Sheard has seared herself into the consciousness of the Canadian music scene. Her work has been favourably compared to Mary Margaret O’Hara and Jane Siberry. Her lyrics have been likened to poetry by Margaret Atwood, called kaleidoscopic, provocative, insightful and witty; “the words of a poet”(Globe and Mail).Anemone is Mia’s latest CD, recorded during February and March 2002, following Reptilian 2000, and With Love and Squalor 1996. The universal praise from critics garnered by Reptilian and Anemone have established Mia’s career in music. The Globe and Mail called Reptilian “the work of a true original”, and the album placed high among many year-end Top Ten polls -- including the Globe and Mail and NOW Magazine’s.Mia grew up in a musical family. Singing since age 3, she was a member of the Jarvis Collegiate Chamber Choir, performing Benjamin Britten, Bach and Pergolesi at St. Martin in the Fields and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, England. She studied singing at the Royal Conservatory of Music for three years, receiving Honours in Grade Nine Singing. Mia has been composing music of her own for over ten years.Mia has appeared on CTV’s Open MIke with Mike Bullard, TVO’s Studio 2, and CBC Television’s Play. Her CBC Radio appearances include This Morning, Sounds Like Canada, Bandwidth and Here and Now. She has graced the cover of NOW Magazine, toured Canada extensively, and recently made musical forays into the UK and Ireland.Mia has appeared vocally on the following recordings: Vostok VI, Black Eyed Sue (Kurt Swinghammer); Harmelodia (Rheostatics); Through a Revolution (Dan Goldman); Cut A Man’s Heart Out (Arlene Bishop); Radio Fuse Box (Andy Stochansky); No One Ever Suspected Him of Being the Poppy Salesman (Martin Tielli); Songs of Work and Freedom (Brothers Cosmoline); Arc (Kitchenmusik); Crazy Wisdom (Chris Warren); Could’ve Been King (Blair Packham); Bitter Beauty (Jason Collett); The Unavoidable Truth (Reid Jamieson); H-wing (Kevin Hearn).
