About Me

Southern Rhode Island native Dorian James Duffy is known for his versatile state of mind and down home style of bass playing. Bringin’ it to you fresh, honest, hot or heavy every time, if not all at once. Dorian hopes to take you on a journey through American culture with his musical endeavors in Rhode Island, Chicago, and now Southern California."I was forced to play piano at a young age ( I am now thankful) , and the chance to join the school band in the 5th grade. Knowing that the most attractive and mature girl in class at the time was going to be learning the sax, I was soon decieved into learning it as well. pops, AFTERMATH whom named his sons Uriah (Uriah heep), Yes (the band yes), and Dorian (the mode) after rock bands, showed me some songs by some older bands called like the Beatles or something. Which seemed like "oldies" to me as a 10 year old in the 90's... Which I do love! I appreciate all music, especially rock, BUT aggressive sounding bands _ Metallica, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains made sense to me. -Melodicly, I heard a tape of this guy Victor Wooten, this guy Flea and my own brother Uriah soar on this instrument called the bass, and there I stayed. Pops bought me one at age 13, and took me to see the flectones the next night. I remeber thinking “fuck the school band--I need to be playing shit with personality”. played through CD's by the Chilli's, 311, King's X, Rage Against the Machine, Primus and Ozzy to learn the instrument. Enevitably I started playing in a garage writing grunge and progressive Dream Theater influenced geek-rock songs, gigging by the next year. Playing ONLY shows to benefit breast cancer and 9/11 for YEARS. Having felt pressure from other “real” musicians I conformed and joined the jazz band, only to eventually remind himself that it wasn’t for me-at that point in time. I had a hard time with lessons, I couldn't jive it. in that sense I'm sef taught. bass is something deep to me, and most of my closest companions seem to play or be aware-of the instrument. Thats exactly where I look to learn. My brother, Uriah Duffy who's been playin' for the family stone, whitesnake, an lyrics born has always helped me out. Guys like Larry Graham, Jaco, and Pino are an inspiration for me lately. Same time I started playing bass I started recording electronics and hip hop music on my dad's computer with reason and such. Started up the "money crew". I've always liked to look at hip hop from a Danny Elfman-esk perspective- aka rhymth AND actual MUSIC, there I said it. You can make any genre bounce, don't be fooled by the watered down iced tea. -I played for acoustic act JJ paolino, and Rock bands LUCID and SOC till 18. Then moved to Chicago to "pursue" a degree in music production. Played alittle of this, little of that. Eventually met friends Marc and Genevieve, a guitar player and singer, and began jamming on monday nights. We started a group called “Company of Thieves”. Leaving school after one year, we recorded with producer Johnny k (3 doors down, disturbed) and recorded a full length with Chicago producer Sean O’Keefe all independently. Check it out. This process really helped me distinquish the difference between an approach on writing bass lines, and writing songs. -. Since then, I've been working on a debut album in southern California, and I'm happy to say that it's going groovy and loud. I've been bassin', Singin', keyboardin', and been told I can still only play drums for fun...
