About Me

Turntable maverick Planet Sutcliffe spent his formative years in Rochdale, home of acts of such notoriety as Bola, DNCN and the legendary Autechre. After a stint as frontman of the uncompromising four-piece 'Four Letter Words', he turned his attention to the dance-floor and has never looked back.

On the turntables Planet Sutcliffe made his name spinning an organic selection of classic hip-hop, soul and funk gems rock, dub, ska, dancehall and roots reggae through to early and nu-skool breakbeat classics, fine rare bootlegs and 45's.

Also well noted for his consummate skratching abilities, he made a guest skratch appearance on Dutch label XXX on the "Name of my DJ" EP in 2003.

Highly influential in the Amsterdam scene for the five years before his return to sunny Manchester, Sutcliffe was the engine behind the infamous "Planet of the Breaks" parties, booking some incredible local talent as well as international DJs and Live acts.

Whilst in Amsterdam he also held a 5 year residency at The Greenhouse Effect, a 2 year residency at the Kashmir Lounge and lauded appearances at countless other clubs/venues/parties/coffeeshops etc. (Paradiso, Melkweg, Club Elf, Pakhuis Wilemina, Club 8, The Sandberg Institute etc)

A favourite amongst the free party scene, Planet Sutcliffe has worked with legendary crews such as Jungle Terra, Chronic Soundz and Lionstyle, never failing to rock the dance-floor.

Further credits as a promoter in his own right are his collaborations with the Greenhouse Effect, Siberie, and Sub United Queens Day stages.

Now firmly back in the Manchester scene and already making waves, great things are expected from this young talent for 2007 and beyond.

Planet Sutcliffe can be found hard at work in his studio daily. Grafting together elements of hip-hop and soul, modern and old-skool dance production, heavy dub rhythms and over-dubbing live musicians with a relentless drum style. He produces an organic and unique yet familiar sound: De-classifying and hyphenating genres…

Notable events since his re-patriation include:

Having his skratch showcase track: "A Scratch Odyssey" accepted by the Noise Festival, 2006. The track was chosen to feature in the soundtrack to the documentary: “Raw Creatives” and was also exhibited in the Urbis museum, Manchester, during October and November 2006. "A Scratch Odyssey" also featured on the NOISE compilation CD, distributed to radio stations and music related media across the UK

Opening for Nelly Furtado on her: “Loose” tour at Nottingham Ice Arena. Sunday 18th Feb 2007.

Planet X, the DJ/Production duo. Planet X create live mash-ups of ruff instrumental beats under fresh rap, soul and ragga-pellas, with dynamite scratching and live f/x. Planet X perform live on stage with four turntables, two CDJs and two mixers, crafting seamless four hour sets before your very ears. Planet X also produce DJ remixes and blend artwork together in the studio.

Planet X held their first 5 monthly parties at PoNaNa, Manchester to critical acclaim. Planet X will be appearing at Beat-Herder Festival this summer (last weekend in June 2007) and will also return to the Manchester club scene when people want to go indoors again. (Sept)
