finding better answers:
*my friend eleanor offers the following:
"I am really trying to pay more attention to the 'reduce' portion of 'reduce, reuse, recycle' and therefore have been trying to figure out, 'how the heck does one stop getting junk mail about credit card offers, student loans, and similar such things?' And I think I have found the answer! Or at least part of the answer! And I would like to share it with you.
There is a website you can go to that leads you through a free process to take your name off a the lists that are used to generate credit card and student loan offers. It is at:
https://www.optoutprescreen.com/opt_form.cgi
It seems 100% legit to me, and, just in case you ever WANT credit card junk mail later, you can always 'opt in' to start receiving it again at any time. As those of you who rent apartments know, credit card offers just keep coming for every person who has ever lived at a place, which means we all are probably leaving trails of totally worthless paper at our previous residences, etc., etc. I think it
would be great to make a small dent in this waste, as well as to send a message that direct junk mail is not appreciated.
For added fun,
https://www.dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailing
is a website you can go to that will help you stop receiving store catalogs if you get a lot of those and don't want to!"

To move past the pain, to feel the power of change, transformation, revolution, we have to speak now--acknowledge our pain now, claim each other and our voices now."
