Bio:
Inspiring, beautiful, and moving are three words that are often heard surrounding this three piece band from Buffalo. Thousands have been touched by their music, which has spanned more than twenty years and continues to grow.
The Goo Goo Dolls formed in 1986 as the Sex Maggots, and consisted of newly found best friends, guitarist John Rzeznik and bassist Robby Takac, and drummer George Tutuska. Soon enough, the band were asked to change their name, and behold, the Goo Goo Dolls were born. The band released their first album, ‘Goo Goo Dolls’, in 1986 and their second album ‘Jed’ in 1989 after having moved to Los Angeles.
On the third album, Hold Me Up, Rzeznik comes alive and shares the vocal duties with Takac, singing ‘There You Are’ and a favourite of many, ‘Two Days in February’. The band played their heavy metal punk rock music in venues like CBGB, and back in Buffalo the band would be seen regularly rocking in the Continental.
‘Superstar Car Wash’ was made in 1993 and had record company owners stir in their sleep. ‘We Are the Normal’ which Rzeznik wrote with his hero Paul Westerberg of the Replacements, saw numerous plays on independent and college radio, and the Goo Goo Dolls were finally being recognized.
Shortly after recording the band's fifth album A Boy Named Goo, George Tutuska was asked to leave the band after Rzeznik quit because he couldn't be in the same room with Tutuska. Takac asked Tutuska to leave and Rzeznik to come back. The band believes this was one of the lowest points of their career, filled with guilt and failure, but as Rzeznik said later, “sometimes it’s either sink or swim.†For Takac, he ultimately felt lost, both in faith and hope. Reflecting back on the incident, he half jokingly states “that’s when I started medicating myself!†But the band moved forward from this December 31, 1994 incident. The remaining duo, Rzeznik and Takac, held auditions, and found the rock that is Mike Malinin. They haven’t looked back since.
The release of ‘Name’ from the fifth album, ‘A Boy Named Goo’ earned the band a bout of commercial success. They found themselves doing countless interviews in radio stations, appearing on late-night shows and presenting awards to Michael Jackson, ‘A Boy Named Goo’ became the first album in Metal Blade (the record company the band were first signed to) history to achieve double-platinum status. The success, however, was bittersweet, as the band found themselves in serious debt – another low point which also invoked a legal battle with the record company. The band filed suit against Metal Blade, claiming they had not earned any royalties from their album’s sales. A settlement eventually came about which had the band signed to the company’s parent company, Warner Bros. Records.
However, having won this battle, it seemed Rzeznik had lost all his energy to fight one more. He began to struggle with a career threatening case of writer’s block, and had band mates Robby Takac and Mike Malinin biting their nails for months. Rzeznik feared the worst and plummeted into depression. “The one thing that I was good at was being taken away from me†he says, “It was the one thing I did pretty good, and now I can’t do itâ€. At this point, Rzeznik questioned himself as both a songwriter and a musician, asking himself “am I really supposed to be doing this?â€
As it turned out, yes, he was supposed to be ‘doing this’. In Janurary 1998, John was asked to write a song for the movie ‘City of Angels’. Without hesitation, John went to work and in a matter of hours, he had created a ballad that wouldn’t allow them to ever turn back to that garage. “I was determined to finish a thought, and that was what Iris was all about†Rzeznik says, “I was so happy that I’d completed a thought. So happy. And it got us psyched to finish the record.†‘Iris’ propelled the band to stardom and recognition, and the song stayed on top of Billboard Hot 100 Airplay charts for 18 weeks, and was nominated for three Grammys that year.
The band’s sixth album came in the form of ‘Dizzy Up The Girl’. Their seemingly continuous hit ‘Iris’ was included on this triple platinum album, and was among Top-Ten hits "Slide", "Black Balloon", "Broadway", and "Dizzy’. The new sound drew more and more fans, adding to those who had indulged in the sound of Goo from the Superstar Car Wash and Name era.
In 2001, the Goo Goo Dolls released their first ever compilation CD, What I Learned About Ego, Opinion, Art & Commerce. Next, Gutterflower (2002) achieved gold certification, producing the hits "Here Is Gone", "Sympathy", and "Big Machine". On July 4, 2004, the band performed a free concert in their hometown of Buffalo, continuing through a deluge of rain that can be seen on the DVD released later that year. The DVD also contained a studio version of the Goo Goo Dolls' cover of "Give a Little Bit" by Supertramp. The single reached the top of the Adult Top 40 chart in 2005.
In 2006, the Goo Goo Dolls marked their 20th anniversary with their new album Let Love In, which included the studio recording of "Give a Little Bit" as well as other top 10 radio singles "Better Days," "Stay With You," and "Let Love In". With their third consecutive single ("Let Love In") from the album, the Goo Goo Dolls hit a record 12 Top 10 hits in Adult Top 40 history, beating Matchbox Twenty and Sheryl Crow. The band then released a song from the July 2007 Transformers movie called "Before It's Too Late", originally titled "Fiction" which the band had been asked to write for the film.
On November 13, 2007, the band released a greatest hits album entitled Greatest Hits Volume One: The Singles, which includes a new version of "Name" and a remix of "Feel The Silence" by Michael Brauer. A second greatest hits album containing b-sides, rarities, and a live performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre from their "Let Love In" tour, is due to be released sometime in 2008.
The Goo Goo Dolls have also announced that they are recording sessions for a new album in their own studio in Buffalo, which was a recent and now completed project. The studio was named ‘Inner Machine Studios’ after their official fan club.
