Sounds Like: ..Chandra Kant Prasad, been born December 15th, 1964, known also under the name of Sohan Lal, is the current agent of the musical tradition of a gharana established at least since 1845 to Bénares (Varanasi).
Chandra Kant Prasad plays as well the shahnai (oboe of North India) than the bansuri (traverse flute in bamboo). It is with Babu Lal ji, in 1845, that a specific style of the shahnai builds up itself, which integrates specific elements of Banaur (Bihar).
From 1870, this style is passed on to the son Buddhu Lal ji, which bequeaths him in his turn to his son Nand Lal ji. Thanks to the education which he hold from the great singer Pandit Mahadev Prasad Mishra (himself disciple Pandit Bade Ram Das) bend the game of the shahnai in the direction of the vocal (ang-gayaki ) style. From 1920, big is the reputation of Nand Lal ji which crosses the country at the request of the main clauses of the realm. His son, Kanhiya Lal will transmit later his knowledge to his own son Chandra Kant Prasad.Chandra Kant Prasad begins at the age of seven learning shahnai with Nand lal ji and the study of singing with Pandit Mahadev Mishra. He studied with his grandfather Nand Lal ji for ten years and simultaneously receives the teaching of his father Khanhiya Lal ji. After the death of Nand Lal ji, Chandra Kant Prasad continues his training with his cousin, the famous Rama Shankarji. Chandra Kant grows and totally immersed in a family of artists within which it imposes greater discipline and rigorous practice. Along with his study of shahnai it secretly studied the bansuri. But his grandfather Nand Lal ji wants it spends his study that shahnai ... Instrument family. It continues nonetheless studying the flute despite harassment of his grandfather.
He will be influenced by the style of play of Pandit Bholanath Prasanna, (the famous Guru of Hari Prasad Chaurasia) as well as the style of his gharana and the inflection of shahnai to become the recognized and respected flutist that he is today.
In 1982, when barely aged eighteen years, Chandra Kant part in a competition to Bénares Hindu University; he finishes first in the senior category and then received his first medal.
In 1985, he took part in two other competitions, one at BHU (Banares Hindu University) and one at the Sangeet Natak Academy Lucknow. It distinguishes itself once again by finishing first of the two competitions. Three years later, in 1988, he won in Bombay another prize, Sur Mani Award at the Kalkekalaka competition.
It plays on many occasions both shahnai as the bansuri flute, and pursuing his teaching activity among cadets of the family but also from followers of any origins. We recognize the style of Chandra Kant Prasad touches to its traditional folk and the way it dealt with delicate playing instrumental, in the manner of singing in the style of khyal and thumri.
