About Me

My name is Astrid Camille, I am a proud Mom to two beautiful boys. My oldest is Kai Michael, and he is 7 years old. He is BEAUTIFUL!! And a TRUE JOY!! My little Angel!!! Kai is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder/Mental Retardation. He receives tons of therapy to help him with his challenges and he attends mainstreamed First Grade where he has exceeded everyone's expectations, including his teachers. My youngest is Heath Michael, who just turned 6 years old. Not a baby anymore, WAAAAAAAAAAA!! He is my little MIRACLE. Born at 30 weeks and stayed in the NICU for 31 days. You would never guess though as he is a typical boy, very smart, active, and a spoiled brat. Heath attends Kindergarten at the same school as Kai. He is a busy boy, but LOVES every minute of it. Heath loves his brother very much. Both get along perfectly!! They are true BROTHERS!!
As for me I am married to Michael for 11 years now. We live in Pittsburgh. I am a Stay at Home Mom but work nights and weekends in retail. My main goals right now are for my boys to be HAPPY, for Kai to get the services he needs, for Heath to have a typical childhood and for me to keep sane.

Kai has Oral Aversions and Major Feeding Problems. For more than 3 years he only ate Del Monte Bananas and Strawberries with Tapioca. We then started a Functional Feeding Program at the Pittsburgh's Children's Institute and after 6 months in it, with the help of his therapist at the Institute, and his at home TSS, Emily we finally found a program that works. Kai now eats Pudding (Vanilla and Butterscotch), applesauce (Pear, Mango, Cinnamon, and other flavors)and Yogurts (Lime and Blueberry) UPDATE - Kai's TSS Emily left us abruptly, not her fault, still it made a huge impact on all of us, specially me. I hit ROCK BOTTOM. Because of this Kai regressed and he is back to eating only pudding and Baby Food. I so blame myself for this, trying hard to undo the damage I did. TRYING!!! As of November 2006 we decided the Children's Institute was not meeting Kai's needs and therefore not working for Kai so we pulled him. Now we see a new team at the Autism Center of Pittsburgh run by Cindy Waeltermann founder of AutismLink. Kai gets OT and PT there, and so far he has made progress in the sense he now smells food (he didn't before) and immediately knows is food, won't eat it but will ask for Butterscotch. To me that is progress. He also plays with his mouth a lot too, and teeth. More progress, and I hope he keeps progressing.

MY PASSION

What is autism?
Autism is a developmental disability. Children with autism have a problem with part of their brain. That means, kids with autism develop differently than most other kids.
Children with autism may also have a different way of seeing, hearing, or feeling things. Like when you have gloves on in the winter and you try to pick up a pencil. It may be a little harder to pick up, and it feels different than if you didn't have the gloves on.
Children with autism may have difficulty communicating. Some children with autism can not speak, so they may learn to use computers or a board with pictures on it to tell people what they want or how they feel. Some children with autism use sign language.
Having autism is like living in a foreign country where you do not know the language or like trying to learn the rules of a very difficult game.
People are born with autism and will have it all of their lives. But, they can learn and grow up to have jobs just like you.

What are people with autism like?
Some children with autism may have trouble talking. There are some people with autism who don't speak at all, others who speak sometimes, and some who talk just like you.
You may hear a child with autism repeat a word or phrase that someone else said to them. They often don't ask for what they want or need...or talk about their feelings.
Children with autism may act a little different from other children. They may spend time alone or seem like they aren't paying attention. They may act as if they can't see or hear other people. Some may rock their bodies back and forth or flick their fingers or do other things which seem different.
It's not easy for children with autism to make friends, because they may act differently. But, everybody is different! That's what makes being friends with other children more fun. You can learn a lot from each other.

Can autism be cured?
Nobody knows what causes it, so we can't make it go away. The children who have autism can be helped to grow up like other children. They may not go to college (some people with autism do) or buy their own house, but they can get a job and learn to make friends.
They have feelings and they care for others. People with autism can grow up to be computer operators, artists, work at the bank or the shopping mall.

How many people have autism?
In the United States, about one and a half million (that is 1.5 million) people have autism. But that is just in America. There are people with autism all over the world. One in every 166 people have autism. Chances are you have some with autism living in your development or on the same street.
More boys than girls have autism. They can be rich, or poor, or black or white, or brown, or red. They can live in a city, or in the country.

The Beautiful Butterfly

I am the child who has Autism,
who can not do the things that you do,
But that does not mean I am useless,
I have feelings and emotions, just like you.

I can hear the things you are saying,
even though with words I can not yet speak,
I may not be physically-able to do things like you,
but that does not mean I am weak.

I know there are many things about me,
that you simply do not understand,
But please don't shy away from me,
I could use a friend, and a warm helping hand.

I may have a mind that works differently,
Pages in a book - I may flap instead of turn,
But that does not mean you can't teach me,
you might be surprised at just what I can learn.

If you think when I don't cooperate, I'm misbehaving,
And conclude that I'm not disciplined enough,
Please take a moment to consider,
that the road I must travel can be rough.

When you stare at me, point, or start to whisper,
it makes me sad, and I so want to cry –––
Why do you think of me as some crippled caterpillar?
Why can't you see that I'm God's beautiful butterfly?

Madonna, I grew up listening to her music and I am fascinated by her and her life. Heath Ledger as I think he is a great actor. Jeremy Irons because he is the best ACTOR there is. Tom Cruise to ask him why is he so cuckoo. Ricky Martin, well I LOVE HIM. Tori Amos would like for her to give me a private concert. LOVE HER MUSIC!! Laurie Berkner, both my boys like her and her music. Martha Stewart as I want to be her. Susan Smith, I want to beat the crap out of her. George W. Bush as I like to surround myself with stupid people so I can be the smartest. Jon Stewart he is the funniest man alive. Gwen Stefani so her style may rub off on me. Angelina Jolie I want to be her and to ask her what kind of potent drugs was she on when she married Billy Bob Thorton. Brad Pitt to ask him what took him so long to leave that boring Jennifer Aniston. And I could go on...

Heroes:

Kai in the newspaper, talking about Autism in the schools. Kai represents Inclusion.
Here is an article about Kai in our local newspaper about Autism and the Walk NOW for Autism.
Here is my son Kai in our community newspaper, not quite the cover like Heath got, but still. The article is about the Autism Center of Pittsburgh which opened its doors in November of 2006. Kai gets OT and ST there once a week. He is on the picture with his OT, Heather.
Here is my son Heath on the cover of our community newspaper. Picture was taken during the 4th of July Parade!!
My HEROES are my son KAI MICHAEL!! He has overcome more than anyone I know. My youngest son HEATH because he has gone through a lot in his short life and came out a strong little boy.
And my HUSBAND because he has gone through the same things I have and maybe more, and he has kept his composure and have showed no signs of falling apart. He is my strength and, frankly, the main reason I am still ALIVE.
Oh and also Jason McElwain, and Autistic teen from Rochester, NY. WATCH THIS VIDEO!!!
