Barn Owl

amen the thunderbolt in the dark void

About Me

FROM OUR MOUTHS A PERPETUAL LIGHT IS AVAILABLE NOW!
from Not Not Fun: "Since first bearing witness to Barn Owl’s mythically desolate amplifier alchemy last year, we’ve been rabid fans/fanatics. But like lots of badass bands, BO are a rolling stone, heavy on the transformation tip, and the BO of today is an altered beast from the one that folkily fingerpicked Bridge To The Clouds and their self-titled disc way back when. And in case we’re not being clear: this is a beautiful thing. From Our Mouths A Perpetual Light burns with the sun-dead majesty of a Death Valley burial ground, all wasted waterless expanse and cracked earth smoke blowing in the dry wind. Heavy western drone revelations bleed into forlorn guitar drift, downcast percussion plods across the plain, a skull on its side lies in the sands. Evan Caminiti and Jon Porras have somehow flawlessly evolved Barn Owl into a blazing new universe, and From Our Mouths… is the first mission statement from their new spectral/aesthetic outpost, a stunning and timeless eight-song suite of grim cinematic electricity. Tune in, drop dead, rot on. In swank matte jackets with ‘four-armed demon warrior-yogi’ artwork by the band. Edition of 435 (275 on white wax, 160 on black)."

New Release from the Barn Owl family:
EK CAMINITI's "BURIED LIGHT"
"e.k. caminiti is best known as half of the mighty barn owl. but on "buried light," we are snatched up and taken into a new direction, one that is solely his. peeling back the skin, "buried light" offers a glimpse of magnetic mazes that are shrouded in a cloak of silver haze. these songs are, like their barn owl brethren, organic and dense. layers of fuzz hide the melodic picks and strums underneath. with each attempt, caminiti soars through cosmos on a bed of aural space debris.moving like a nightcrawler, "buried light" is full of twists, turns, and even a little magic. caminiti utilizes a whole host of instrumentation from guitars and voice to bells and chimes. the end result is something rich and varied. "buried light" is an absolute gem. limited to 88 handnumbered copies, packaged in j-cards printed on recycled paper s w/ painted red tapes & an insert." - digitalis ltd

Aquarius Review:
"Barn Owl have become quite the talk of the psych/drone/folk scene in the last year and for very good reason. The duo have released some great limited edition cd-r's on Digitalis and on their own, and their intense and trance inducing live shows have reeled in many believers, including us! Tapping into ritual drone and spiritual psychedelia this two song cassette recorded at a festival in Echo Park a few months ago is further proof that this is one of the most promising bands roaming the underground at the moment. While there are no shortage of psych drone acts these days, there is something so concrete and real about the sounds Barn Owl conjure up. Kind of like if newer Earth was less spaghetti western and more engaged in exploring LaMonte Young's dreamhouse. There is a patience and subtlety in Barn Owl's music that is way beyond their young years. They use guitars, drums, banjo, harmonium and voice to travel upwards to some magical place filled with dust, dirt and delight. This one is super limited too, so it'll be gone in the blink of an eye."

"Barn Owl will suffer an immediate set-back by location alone. San Francisco is seen as a place were psychedelia music is still king. While that may be true, Barn Owl have transformed the mundane sounds of Bay Area folk into mind-bending acoustics.
Comparing the work of the San Fran group to that of local big shot Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, et. al.) would be doing a great disservice to Barn Owl. Chasny casts a large shadow, but Barn Owl's Evan Caminiti, Jon Porras, and Mike Bailey are on the cusp of breaking through and creating their own immense shadow over the Golden Gate. The combination of organic musical elements and raw electronics create a scene out of an Ennio Morricone scored spaghetti western. Desolation, isolation, and the slow decline of civilization--just the way it should be." -electronic voice pheonomenon

"Another great record seeps its way out of San Francisco. Barn Owl fuse the folk traditions of the bay area with desolate touches of high plains lonesome night blues that moan to the clouds. Bridge to the Clouds shares much in common with the natural tremor that envelops Brightblack Morning Light; though Barn Owl forgo any organ romps, instead trading in haunted vocal incantations and spidery six strings above a storm of howl and the ghosts of spaghetti westerns set in forgotten cities. Barn Owl have definitely followed a different shaman on this one, deep into the burnt crust of desert wasteland only to bring the spirit of the coast with them. Dark nights and beautiful mornings that culminate more in awareness than bitterness. This record traverses both sides of the soul; exposing the ink black center and then wrapping it back up in a film of tender humanity." - Raven Sings the Blues
