"Sally" is the self-chosen nickname I have labored under since first grade, after becoming enamored of deaf character "Sally Ruth" on a television show about teenaged seafarers called 'The Voyage of the Mimi.'
I demanded that my parents refer to me as "Sally Ruth" and began signing my little, six-year-old documents with that name. After mulling over it awhile, I dropped the "Ruth" and requested that my parents submit a note to my first grade teacher, Mrs. Seamans, asking that she, along with the rest of the class, begin calling me Sally on a permanent basis.
In the fifth grade, I read "Little Women" in which there is a debutante named "Sallie." I began using this alternate, numerology-augmenting spelling of my name, but quickly lost interest in the seemingly redundant, silent "e," and dropped it in favor of the balanced, eighties-friendly and now legendary five letter "Salli."
