Sham-Fonk Rhythm Section

About Me

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Scipio and Ken Hyder have been playing together for about 15 years. Although they come from different musical backgrounds, one thing which has united them more strongly in the past few years is their work individually, and occasionally together with gifted Siberian musicians. And in particular, this has meant shamanic music. Now they have put their accumulated experience together in the Sham-Fonk Rhythm Section. Scipio has developed his own funk-playing, honed in Philly, into a new approach which is always popping and driving, but it can also speed up or slow down within a bar - something he heard when listening to shamans in Tuva and of Native American Indians. Instead of playing drum kit, Ken Hyder is playing the dungur shaman drum. The essence of shamanic drumming is playing one note at a time. Every beat is the one. And when playing together, shamans play in their own time. It could be together with other shamans, but it’s just as likely to be in a different tempo. That’s what makes shamanic music so unique. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++The Sham-Fonk Rhythm Section is now available for festivals or tours in collaboration with other musicians looking to play in a new and exciting setup. You can hear how Scipio and Ken play together as part of the quartet "RealTime" with trumpeter Andy Knight and the innovative percussionist Z’ev on this page.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Musicians of Sun Ra and Patti Labelle often accompanied in concert "Clouds". Thereafter, joining ex-"Osibisa" member Lofty Amao forming “Zzebra” which opened and headlined with such artist as Jimmy Cliff, Robin Ford (ex-Joni Mitchell and Miles Davis), Jack Miller’s Reggae Rockers (which included musicians of Bob Marley and of Peter Tosh). Sally Nyolo (Zapp Mama), NAKA from Guinea Bissau, Juao Motta(of Angelique Kidjo/Naka)and Chihuahua, the punk-rock group who gave birth to the Mano Negra. Later moving to London, many recordings and gigs: Back 2 Basics(featuring Maxi Jazz), The Dynamix with Ken Hyder and Jon Dobie. Most recently touring world-wide with the 2005 World Music award winners “Yat-Kha” (Tuva-Siberia).+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++ KEN HYDER is from Dundee, Scotland, and after playing Scottish folk music, and jazz, he decided to put these forms together with his pioneering fusion band, Talisker. In the 1970s he also played avant garde jazz in the Little Theatre Club, London run by the late John Stevens. He then started bringing together different kinds of music, playing with South African, Irish, South American musicians, and with Japanese and Tibetan Buddhist monks. He played and recorded with Russian musicians like the late Vladimir Rezitsky and Siberians including Sainkho Namtchylak - and Gendos Chamzyryn in the cutting-edge band, K-Space. He has also studied and played with a number of Tuvan shamans.I edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V4.4 (www.strikefile.com/myspace)
Sounds Like: "Hyder's constructions draw equally on dance and industry, as self-sustaining as ritual, as functional as the chug of locomotive pistons." Julian Cowley, The Wire+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++"In a recent interview, Hyder remarked that shamanistic drumming has nothing to do with timekeeping; it is a means of accessing spiritual energy. Beyond all expectations, this recording actually touches that energy source - it is charged with visceral yet transcendent vibrations. Simply awesome." Bill Tilland, BBC
