D.S.F. Earth Corps's Bio
D.S.F. Earth Corps has been writing and performing original music since the early 1990’s. This is a group of seasoned performers who really enjoy making music together. Each member of D.S.F. has gone off and been involved with other projects along the way, which has given the band a maturity and experience that, when brought back together, really shows.
Guitarist and lead vocalist, Phillip Price, originally from Atlanta, has been singing, writing, and playing guitar since 1983. Attending Western Carolina University, Price met vocalist Jeff Johnson and percussionist Ned Percival and began forming the bond that holds D.S.F. tightly in the groove. Johnson and Price have been working on harmonies with each others voice for over 20 years resulting in some very compelling and powerful sounds.
Price, Percival, and Johnson all moved to the Chapel Hill area in 1990 and quickly found a powerful caveman style drummer (Michael St.John) known to many as Bam Bam Wilson. They knew right away that Bam Bam had the stones to lay down thick and heavy at times and light and juicy at others. They got two for one with Bam Bam because he had been jammin’ with bassist Ronnie Reed, who fell right into the groove and anchored the whole thing down.
From 1990 to 1996 D.S.F. Earth Corps hit the club circuit. Their wild look and powerful rhythms quickly made them a fan favorite. D.S.F.’s lyrical inspirations range from Christ and Christianity to environmental and social concerns including the legalization of marijuana for the purposes of fuel, fiber, and medicine. This is a band that can not be put into one category. Musical influences include everything from mountain blues to island grooves with funky rock in the middle. It's not unusual for a DSF song set to range from Bluegrass to Rock and Roll (or Drivin’ Skankin’ Funk if you prefer); to some smooth Reggae Grooves occasionally topped off with a tongue in cheek Country song. Nor would it be unusual for them to have a full horn section one night and a banjo player plus an extra set of drums and conga drums the next night in edition to their usual line up. D.S.F.’s musical and lyrical experimentation combined with a positive vibe and message made them a stand out band at a time when Grunge's dark and depressing stylings dominated the music scene. D.S.F. has played clubs from the ocean to the mountains all over the southeastern United States performing in front of thousands of people over the years. D.S.F. Earth Corps has had two studio albums to date: "Petals and Spores" in 1992 and "Life . . . . It’s A Wonderful Occasion" in 1994.
D.S.F. took a break in the late 90’s to begin families and explore other musical avenues. In 2000, D.S.F. began performing together again and have been working on new songs that will be compiled on a full length album sometime in the near future.
