Gospel music has come a long way since its American domination by the likes of The Winans and Yolanda Adams. British Christians are now getting in on the act and taking it to new levels- today you can hear British gospel music of most genres including hip-hop, RnB and reggae.
But one group has completely flipped the script. COMMISSION- consisting of brothers Tope Icie and Gabriel Bless MC Chidozie from West London- have succeeded where others have failed by bringing the good news to Garage.
Formed in the early part of February 2004 , originally consisting of 3 members, Commission set out with a mission to produce music of excellence ,relevance and truth.
Incorporating the familiar two-step beat and speed mcing that is traditional garage with a pop format of catchy hooks and memorable lyrics, their brand of gospel garage aims to be grimy enough for the die-hard garage fan yet accessible to the mainstream body of Christ.
The brothers passion for God and reaching the lost is evident in their music. Their bold and direct approach is indicative of their insider knowledge of Londons underground music scene and urban youth culture .Their lyrics aim to inspire, convict and point the listener towards Christ. Each of their songs is laced with a message of hope and redemption- if they dont grab you with the intensity of their sound, then the poignancy of their words will definitely give you a fresh insight of the Gospel.
Commission have already performed at various venues and events including Ruach Ministries, the Open Mic sessions at the MTV Base Lounge, Festival of Lifes youth outreach NXT GEN and were the opening act for renowned gospel reggae group Christafari at Jesus House in summer 2004. They were also elected to perform at the 2005 Gospel Newcomers Competition held at the prestigious, Fairfield Halls and will also be present at the Soul Survivor 2005 program .
Their promotional single- Up 2 U - is currently number 1 on the UB1 Hits chart and they are busy in the studio at the moment preparing tracks for a forthcoming album. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you COMMISSION!
