About Me

Pop Culture Press Magazine. Greensboro, N.C.’s Little Mascara has a lot of going for it: good name, great songs and best of all, red-hot lead singer Jesse Derusha, a Blondie-loving badass with a voice that will make you stay up late, drink too much, drive across the country, fall down and cry yourself to sleep. OK, maybe that’s a bit much, but Derusha is indeed a talent, and her voice blends wonderfully with Chris Micca’s jagged guitar riffs on songs such as “Pacific Coast Highway” and the wild, album-ending “Explode.” Other humdingers include the snarling title track and the one-two punch of “Stripes” and “Bitch.” Dynamite debut. -Andy Turner... ***CD Review. Jan. 4, 2007. Relish Magazine. (rated-three stars)-IF YOU LIKE: SOUNDTRACKS TO A GARAGELAND FEMALE PRISON MOVIE.The considerable appeal of Little Mascara's Hot Pink & Black is in the Triad band's overt desire to have as large a time as possible while attempting to loudly raise a bit of a garage-band ruckus. There is nothing complicated about the band or Jesse Derusha, its vixenator of a sexpot singer. The songs are all relatively simple and are bludgeoned with bash 'n' pop conviction. Lyrics flog a wicked sense of humor as Derusha mixes in-your-face authority with trashmouth derring-do. And her a-go-go delivery, slurred and pogo-pop friendly (think Blondie or Fetchin Bones), provides an intoxicating blend of pop perfection and empowering bad-girl hoodoo. The band's playing may sound out of control, but its guitar-blasting mastery of dynamics and ability to insert radio-worthy hooks and melodic ladders into virtually every song turns seemingly ordinary song structures into something special. This is music to which to rave, riot or pollinate, a soundtrack to a life lived wild and free.It almost doesn't matter that it's as smart as it is fun.- Ed Bumgardner, Relish staff writer....***Excerpt from CD review in Go-Triad (rated-three stars) "Hot Pink & Black," which was released last month, comes out of the blocks like a local version of the New York Dolls ---loud, messy and full of raunchy, in your face lyrics that I could only dream about sneaking into a family newspaper".-----------Jeri Rowe, Go-Triad Dec. Music:

Band Members: Jessie Derusha-vocals, Chris Micca-guitars, Melissa Micca- bass, Toaster-drums, Max Diablo-cowbell, percussion. *** Band history: We joined forces in the middle of the summer 2005. Singer Jessie Derusha was born in Russia. She has been in the U.S. for about nine years and hasn't been kicked out yet but she's working on it. She writes mostly political protest songs and enjoys quiet evenings reading poetry and doing art projects. On stage she is a wildcat possessed by demons. Fun stuff. She also wears fuzzy hats and boots that look like dead animals. Her favorite things are new tattoos and horseback riding in obscure areas of the city. Guitarist Chris Micca is pretty ancient he grew up in NJ and lived in Northern CA for years or so we think. He actually remembers some of the 80's. He likes funky old scooters and motorcycles and breeds show dogs. He can be kinda shady so don't loan him money, but he does write a mean rock song and does have a fabulous TV yellow Les Paul so he can't be all bad. He plays through a Ron Jordan modified Fender Super Reverb amp and a Hughes and Kettner amp with a Marshall cabinet. His former bands have opened shows for The Ramones, The Replacements and many other fabulous bands that start with the letter "R". Miss Micca plays a 1964 mustang bass through a custom Ampeg bass amp. No pedals, no tricks just a wire to the bass and the amp. She was in an all girl band called Action Action that had a top ten hit in Japan in 2003. She grew up in Northern CA and likes good cheap wine, fast cars and fashion design. Jessie's big brother Toaster (Dave Seward) is the drummer. Past bands that he has played with that we know of are: Parkland Charlie, The Smoothies, Boot and The Sams. For fun he likes to record bands and rebuild old tube audio gear. It may be that he has inhaled too much solder because he kinda passes out a lot. Max Diablo plays cow bell and added percussion. He is the drummer for the Malamondos and also for Ironhead. He usually wears a kilt while playing and has been known to rip it off when excited. Max beats a big hunkin hellish cow bell that makes you run screaming and get up and rock the casbah. So there you have it. Stay tuned... ***
